Watch Live channels when DVR is turned off

I run the Channels DVR on my NAS, works fine, no complaints. However when the NAS is turned off I cannot use the Channels software to watch live TV from my hdhomerun. On my Shield, LG TV, iPad (three Channels versions including Beta) everything says “Your channels DVR cannot be found” well, no, it’s turned off. Instead I have to use the horrible hdhomerun app. Why can’t I use Channels to watch live TV when the DVR is turned off? Thanks.

The server app (DVR) ingests all your tuner sources, HD Homerun or otherwise, and sends their content to the client devices (LG TV, iPad, etc.). Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but the clients don’t talk to the HD Homerun on their own. You’d have to use the HD Homerun app for that.

There's a version of Channels that will talk directly to the HDHomeRun, but it's not the same version of the app that works with the DVR. It's separate and you have to pay for it. Search for Channels for HDHomeRun

Channels DVR Server is required to be running the whole time. This is a stated requirement.

Beyond the fact that it powers everything, it’s also how the free app determines you are eligible to use it.

Thank you all for the explanations.
