Watching recording in progress

Hello!
One of the things we liked to do with Tivo was to record a program to create a "time delay" in a current program, which allowed us to fast forward through commercials while watching. This would be while the show recording was in progress. These are daily shows that are timely and we do not want to watch later.

I set up a recording in Channels and tried to watch the recording while in progress. It didn't seem to work in the same way.

Is this possible? Or how could I recreate the same action.

Thanks!

Where are you trying to watch and what happened?

So I set up MSNBC for 2 hours, starting at 7pm. While on the web interface, I tried to see if I could watch the recording after about 30 minutes in. The recording said “interrupted”.

When I checked on the Apple TV, it looked like it was still recording, but was not behaving well. If I put the play point at the end of the current recording point, I couldn’t scroll forward or back on what was already recorded.

I could back out and then go back to the recording. If I did that, I could start at the beginning, but not move the cursor to a mid point and start from there.

Also what was playing didn’t quite match the real timeline, yet I couldn’t tell if the “interruption” was affecting things. There was nothing to let me know wher and how it was “interrupted”.

In other words, very confusing.

So, is this possible to do, create a “time delay” via recording a show and then watching the recording before it’s finished?

The DVR log will have details on the interruption. Sounds like it's not keeping a stable connection to record and that's causing your playback issues.

Ok. So I SHOULD be able to watch a recording while in progress?

I had been running a VPN. I’ll turn it off and see what happens tonight.

Yes

Where is the VPN running? The interruption will either be between the DVR and the tuners, or the tuner and the antenna (bad signal strength/quality)

Running on the router. I'm using an Apple TV.

When all my testing is done, I plan to change to FIOS. I think that will help with the better speed.

In checking on a current recording in progress, for some reason, it keeps opening and closing the connection to the feed.
What would trigger that?

Try the DVR pre-release. If that doesn't work, submit diagnostics while its happening and email support.

Pre-release???

Thanks for that. Will do.

I was just trying to watch a recording in progress. It played at the beginning.
I scrolled forward to further in the time line, not to the end, but it would not play.

Is that normal behavior for a recording in progress?

All bets are off if the recording is disconnecting/reconnecting. Your recorded file is corrupted and will not play back normally.

The file played back fine once the recording was done.

Are you saying it won't behave DURING the recording?

Submit diagnostics and email support so we can check your logs.

There is a repair operation that happens at the end of the recording so maybe that's making it watchable. It depends what kind of interruption is happening and how often.

Will do!

Right now I'm on Spectrum and will be switching to FIOS. DO you think the faster speed will make a difference in this issue?

Just stop playback and restart. It should remember where you left off and playback correctly.

Thanks, but not what I'm trying to do.

I'm using the recording to create a "time delay" to FF though commercials WHILE it's recording. Not exactly a typical use, but I can do this with the Tivo, so thought I would give it a shot with Channels. It might be pushing things a bit.

"Chasing Live TV" IS pushing it with TVE or m3u/IPTV channels that aren't reliable and experience random disconnects, time stamp issues, etc.

You should have no issues doing that with OTA or CABLE recordings coming from an HDHR tuner, which has a more reliable stream than TVE/IPTV sources.

Exactly.
TVE works pretty well on the web player but when it does screw up, usually trying to forward faster than the buffer, a quick stop then restart solves the issue.
