Watching Recordings on Mac

When I try to skip 30 seconds on a recording the video often pauses and seems to be buffering sometimes up to 5 seconds before it skips. This happens more often on longer recordings (like 1-2 hours). I am watching on my Mac using the webplayer and all the recordings are also on my Mac.

Alternatively, when I start to watch a recording using VLC player instead of the web player sometimes the recording will not play right away. It looks like the Mac is doing a security scan as if it is a new app from an unidentified developer. A small window opens up and it says “Verifying.” It can take a long time for the recording to verify and I have to enter my password to trust the developer before I can watch.

Are these experiences normal? Is there a setting I need to do to change this? It makes viewing these recordings on the Mac a little unpleasant.

What kind of Mac are you using?

iMac running High Sierra.

This is mostly expected, since the video has to be converted before it can be played in the browser. Apple is expected to announce some new APIs for macOS development at WWDC in June. We’re going to revisit a native mac app for playback after the announcement.

That’s weird… the verification is of the VLC app, not the recording. It should only happen once when you download VLC.

I’d recommend downloading the latest version of VLC from their website here and deleting the one you currently have: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I think this same behavior happens if I try to open the recording with other apps such as Quicktime (I know that is not recommended to play recordings) or Eyetv.

Are there certain settings that would help playback on the Mac web browser to reduce buffering?

Perhaps decreasing Server Quality or increasing Client Buffer? The AppleTV works great, but when I watch on the Mac it randomly pauses and pauses when I fast forward. I have used both Safari and Firefox browsers.
