I have transitioned from the WD My Cloud Home to a Raspberry Pi 4 USB boot as described elsewhere in this forum. The difference is astounding. I was having a lot of trouble when the My Cloud server would try and accomplish more than one task simultaneously. For example, I could not watch a recording while it was actively recording with consistent success. Nor could I use remote viewing at all. The RPi seems to have solved this issue. I will run a modest load test tomorrow with multiple recordings simultaneously and report my findings. I just thought I should share my current success if anyone else is using the My Cloud Home.
Thanks for sharing!
We were really hoping the MyCloudHome to be a simple one-stop purchase for a DVR, but the specs and OS have been very disappointing.
Glad you hear you decided to try the Pi image and are having good success with it.
I think the real problem with the WD MyCloud Home is that the read/write speeds are artificially slowed down in some way. I have a gigabit connection and my read speed from the WD My Cloud in a simple test is 17MB/s. The read speed from the RPi is 40 MB/s. Note, that both devices are connected to the same gigabit switch. I did a modest stress test on the RPi by recording 8 shows simultaneously while also watching a recording in progress. It didn't skip a beat. I can't see myself ever recording more than 4 let alone 8 at a time, so i'm very happy with where the RPi is. For comparison purposes, I purchased the 8GB version if the RPi but I don't anticipate it matters too much since my memory available never fell below 94%.
Also, worth mentioning, I considered a RAID array with the RPi to increase the read/write speed, but after this test, it's not necessary as the entire test was conducted on a single USB 3 external hard drive.
Going to put aside some money for a raspberry pi set up in the next few months, it seems to be the way to go after reading up on here, but still requires some money, and my WD Home wasn’t that cheap to begin with, hopefully the setup process is straightforward, don’t want to have to spend money on keyboards and mini hdmi cables for one time initial setup issues.
