What is bonjour service?

What is this option for bonjour service and can I disable it?
Is that affect how one can access the web interface of the server or is this how clients such as an Android TV see it the server?

Bonjour is Apple's name for Zeroconf. It is essentially DNS-SD (service discovery) and mDNS (multicast).

You can easily disable it, but it may it more difficult for clients on your home network to discover the DVR server; you may need to manually configure the clients with the IP address of your DVR server.

I dont have any Apple devices or clients.
I have disabled Bonjour, and so far, have not noticed anything different.

Perhaps this Wikipedia article will help a little bit: Zeroconf

This is not specific to Apple devices. Bonjour is simply the name that Apple uses to describe this collection of network technologies. The more generic Zeroconf is used more broadly across the industry. It is just easier to provide an option of "Enable Bonjour" instead of "Enable multicast domain name services (mDNS) and domain name services service discovery (DNS-SD)".

Without bonjour enabled, the Channels app will not be able to automatically find your DVR server. This won't affect you until you delete/reinstall the app, install Channels on a new device, or the IP of your DVR changes.

IP address of sever is set as static, does not change.
So, then the app on a new device would just ask for IP address of server then right?

Correct, you would need to click Connect to DVR > At Home and enter the IP

I keep un-installing Bonjour....it keeps getting re-installed. Is Channels re-installing with server updates?

Could be iTunes updates doing that.
Check for a service running using the executable file mDNSResponder.exe in C:\Program Files\Bonjour
Capture

Yes that exe is there, that is what Bonjour is it seems.

Itunes NEVER been installed on the pc. no Apple software ever has been.
But its (original) install date is when i installed Channels first on the system..so, that why i think Channels installed it. But, could have been some other software i had at some point. like Plex or Emby?

I got it from iTunes, as I never installed Channels DVR on my Windows PC.

Could also be a printer/fax/all-in-one install that did it.

Channels not need this though right? It can be removed/disabled and not affect the "Network Discovery" feature of Channels. A feature i do not use though.

Yes, you can disable/remove it if you select your DVR by IP on your Channels clients..

I have a old Brother B/W laser printer from 2011 (not a AIO)
connected, and shared over network, but pretty sure Windows Printer sharing not use Bonjour.? It uses SMB

Not sure, but maybe an HDHR tuner uses it?
I know many devices you install will check for Bonjour and install it if not already installed/running.

Ah! Think i found the culprit....Epson Scanner software that is installed. The small portable standalone scanner i have, has wifi connection abilities..which, i never could get to work reliably, so just use usb when i need to scan.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction there. Didn't think to check that.

I have network discovery disabled on all my Channels DVR Servers and just use its IP address in my clients. All 6 use the same IP address, just different port numbers.

Yea. Same. Just was not sure if that Bonjour installed program was necessary for that feature to work.
