What’s the best way to share a folder using NFS on my Synology NAS to a PC running Ubuntu Desktop so Channels DVR (running on the PC) can see it?

I’ve been trying for a few days, but I can’t get it to see it.

Ubuntu Server or Desktop? Samba or NFS?

Desktop and NFS

If it was Samba, it's pretty easily done through the Desktop GUI. If it was Ubuntu Server, I'd install cockpit, cockpit-navigator, cockpit-file-sharing and cockpit-identities and do it all (Samba or NFS) through a nice WebUI. But, installing cockpit can be tricky on Desktop, so hopefully somebody else will know a set of working steps.

easy use samba and cifs-utils

He just posted he wants to use NFS and he's running Ubuntu Desktop. He can do Samba from the Desktop GUI:

I read it as the other way around. He has files on his synology and he wants to mount them in ubuntu. I apologize but I don't know nfs but I do something similar with channels on ubuntu and my recordings on a windows system.

Samba is definitely the way to go if Windows is involved, but Linux-to-Linux I believe most prefer NFS as it's lighter weight and typically performs better.

That's a good point though, @gordo81 where is your Channels DVR running? On the Synology, or on the PC?

in that case check this out

especially step 1 and 7.

It’s on the PC. I’m trying to connect my movies and tv shows folders from the Synology to Channels on the PC

It can all be done from the Synology WebUI and the Ubuntu Desktop GUI. I played around with this while watching football, and it's not too difficult -- although you'll probably want to tighten up permissions:

Ubuntu Desktop:

Thank you, it worked! Bad news though.. when I changed the directory for the movies, it started to import all of my movies again so now I have a bunch of doubles, I’ll have to restore it back to a few minutes ago.

OK, so new problem. You need to know how to properly add a new storage location containing CDVR recordings that are already in your recording database. Sound about right?

What process did you use to specify this new path in your CDVR server?

I deleted the old path and put the new one.

Under Sources - Personal Media or General - Storage Paths?

Sources/Personal Media/Movies/Manage Folders

Were these movies imports before, or were they DVR recordings?

They were movie imports.
