Whats the better choice?
A bigger question I think would be where are you planning to install the OS? What kind of device, I mean?
Since one does not actually "see" Channels server DVR but in browser with a url like dvr-nas.local:8090, it may be better to install the server edition as it installs less things and leaves a smaller foot print.
If you plan to use this machine for other things and wish to browse and whatnot, the desktop may be a better option. Some people, like some family members of mine, like the ability to "see" drives mounted in some file explorer.
Since I am using a vm (virtual machine) and have no need for a GUI, I chose ubuntu server as I wanted the least space and resources used. It also comes with SSH usually installed whereas the desktop version usually requires one to install SSH after the fact
It doesn't take an essay to answer your question. Use the server if you know your way around terminal commands and have a second computer to access the channels web ui
Thanks I had issues installing Ubuntu server so for now I settled with desktop. I will see over the long weekend if I have better luck. Just another partition.
Use server. What would you need desktop for except to take up space?
It takes a full 10-15 minutes to set up Ubuntu server. The last thing you need is a gui sitting in the background taking up unneccessary resources. Once it's installed you can ssh directly into the box.
The instructions for installing Channels is even clearer.
My advice is to use a stable for maximum compatibility with anything you install.
You mention a partition, but instead of dual booting have you looked into running it on a VM? Depending on the OS there's free options for running a VM like VirtualBox or Hyper-V/KVM.
How do you use Chrome in Ubuntu Server to do TVE?
If you plan to use TV Everywhere, install your linux distrubution's chrome or chromium package. For example, apt-get install chromium-browser xvfb
I tired that command line exactly, and it errored with chromium-browser not found.
It doesn't matter much, the curl command lines also do nothing.
If there's an error you need to paste the error so we can help.
Try this from the command line:
sudo apt install chromium-browser
If you want the latest version you need to use the app installer/manager to get it from the snap store. Search for 'chromium browser'. I have the Snap version running and it works fine.
