I'm going to set up my Channels DVR using their custom image on an external hard drive connected to a Raspberry Pi. My question is what do most people use for the hard drive? SSD or a regular plug and play hard drive? I can't really see buying and external SSD if you are connecting it via USB 3. Seems like USB 3 would be a bottle neck?
I doubt if watching and recording TV will cause a bottleneck on USB3.
My point exactly. Seems like an SSD would be overkill for watching and recording TV.
A self-powered drive is a must for error free operation.
What drive do you use?
SSD is the best option. Fastest, lowest powered, and most reliable. I use a Samsung T7 usb on one of my Pi's, but on the other pi, i use a random cheap usb 3.0 to sata enclosure and a spare 500gb 2.5in ssd i had lying around.
I use this with my RP 4b Channels DVR, works perfectly: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ODEGWN8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I picked up a 2TB WD My Passport Ultra. I've only recorded a few programs but seems to work just fine.
