Which Synology Rackstation to buy

Hi all,

I am currently running the Channels DVR on my Synology DS1813+. I am looking into upgrading my Synology to a RackStation. I was wondering which RackStation would be the recommended model that will do hardware encoding so that I can watch my shows when away from home.

Thank you very much in advance.

Best regards,
Celso

I don't think Synology makes a Rackstation that will do hardware transcode. You could get a shelf for your rack though and put something like a DS920+ on it. Possibly add an expansion DX517 to it.

Ok thank you for your reply. That's what I thought too, I couldn't find any rackstation with the Quick Sync capability.

I also have a DS220+, maybe I will just use that as a dedicated DVR NAS. It has an INTEL Celeron J4025 for CPU and I think that one does have Quick Sync. I will just put 2 4TB in there, I don't really need much. Then I can get rackstation for everything else, and use the current DS1813 to do backups.

Thanks again.

Quite happy with my RS1221+ with expanded memory (third-party memory, didn't pay the outrageous Synology prices for their rebranded memory).

Thank you Eric. I was looking at the same model.

Experience has shown that once you outgrow the Synology DS units and are considering a rack station model, you should perhaps be considering real file server hardware running a more robust OS. Like perhaps a Dell R720 or newer running TrueNAS. In the long run it will be more stable with large arrays, hardware upgrades will be more flexible and your expansion will be virtually unlimited. Just food for thought from someone that has been there and wasted far too much money sticking with Synology's upgrade path.

Rackstation 2418+ does transcoding. I have one.
