Xeon x55xx Series CPU & Linux

Still learning all about CPUs since 2005 (too a long break in this being my hobby). In any event, using a Dell PowerEdge t30 right now (with E3-1225 V5 CPU) with Windows and love the performance of Channels DVR.

Was looking to setup a Dell PowerEdge T610 (dual Xeon X55xx series CPUs) using Raid 1 for redundancy using Mint Linux 20.1. However, in searching through posts on this forum, I see reference to QSV which I don't think the X series of Xeon supports. Does that create a negative performance hit on the hardware acceleration if I move from the T30 to the T610?

TIA.

On Intel processors, Quick Sync Video (QSV) is the hardware acceleration. If your processor does not have QSV, you do not have hardware acceleration.

Buy a used E5 26XX V3/4 with plenty of cores for cheap and don't worry about QSV.

Thanks. I noticed no hardware option when I installed the new OS on the hardware. With 8 cores with nearly 3ghz speed, I suspect the machine will have plenty of horse power to do the work in software mode.

One interesting tidbit I didn't realize, when I updated the drivers for my Nvidia 710 GT GPU so I could do some crunching on distributed.net rc5-72 project (did it many years ago and have gotten back into it in the last few months), the Hardware option popped back up. I'm assuming the hardware acceleration would be coming off the GPU in that case, not sure how effective the GPU is in hardware vs. the software of the CPUs. I'll play around and see what works best.

Might as well use the gpu as well, build a monster, the dvr to make other dvrs jealous. It can have its own room. So amazing there should be an article on some blog. All in, balls to wall, I built this masterpiece with blood sweat, and tears. Something to tell strangers about. I'm with you bro. Good luck.
