Xfinity TVE Not working

I came home today to realize that my DVR wasn't recording. I restarted my raspberry pi and that didn't fix the problem. So I created a secondary username, and made sure it was not set up for 2 factor authentication. I deleted my old xfinity profile and attempted to log in again with the new one and it seems to be stuck. the logs show a ton of error messages. I've confirmed that I can view live streams directly through the networks websites so that's not the problem. Is there something else I need to do? I'm pasting the logs below. I've deleted my username from them but it was there in the log, I'm just taking it out for safety.

I just submitted logs under the ticket 5dc999ac-0ea1-4f07-a476-39efdc2f864c.

There’s a new bug that has shown up on Channels that has broken my xfinity/comcast connection to some of my TVE channels. A few of the stations showing the problem are CNN and TruTV. I know both are in my subscription and I can get them by going to the apps within Apple TV and authenticating properly.

What’s happening is your latest build is getting an error with ERR_UNKNOWN_URL_SCHEME when trying to authenticate the channels. I know you can see it all in the logs I submitted but here’s the exact examples of the logs where the error occurs.

Also, you have a second bug with Xfinity that once every few weeks or so, this problem happens when I try and tune in a channel and it says Login form prohibited. The fix is to re-scan all the channels and usually it fixes it. Now it clearly is having problems with a few of the channels in the line up with that same error. Clearly something changed and you guys need to update your scripts.

Also when I do a full scan it’s taking literally 30+ minutes. Probably because of these errors it’s timing out and because there are so many that have this error is tied to it.

Right now, I have to go into my apple TV into the dedicated channels to watch them vs. seeing them directly within the Channels DVR application. Can you please look into this and let me know how fast you can fix this issue.

It's not a Comcast/Xfinity issue.

It's the Channels DVR script trying to login and failing. Out of the 100+ channels in my TVE Comcast feed, 75% are working fine. There's about 10-20 networks that are exhibiting that error in the logs. This was working fine up until this morning on all channels. Something changed with a build OR something changed on the provider side that needs to be revisited on the channels side. I submitted a ticket with the complete logs that show how many channels from the very same Xfinity / Comcast account are successfully integrated into my channels DVR server.

No, that does not mean it's a Channels issue. In verifying MLB and WarnerMedia networks for the OP in the thread I referenced, some of my Warner networks had to reauthorize, and they did so without issue.

Therefore, if I can authorize with Channels and my TVE provider, the problem is not necessarily inherent in Channels.

Also, have you verified with the networks in question by trying to log in and view a live stream on the network's website in an incognito/private browser window?

Yep. Did a full recreation of my xfimity TVE feed and I can absolutely use each of the channels that have this issue directly with the websites and the Apple TV applications using my same exact xfinity credentials. I can see the exact channels that have the issue as it says “cable provider authentication failed” just on the subset of channels that are throwing the XML error that I showed in the snippet of logs. Every single one of these channels worked before within the channels DVR server before.

I’m not saying a change didn’t happen on the provider side. I’m saying that the channels script that logs into each of the TVE stations has an exception case that’s not allowing it to login properly now and it needs to be fixed

And this is why TV Everywhere support will probably never exit "beta" status: it's such a moving target, that only a few providers work consistently without issue.

So, Channels most likely didn't change, but Comcast did.

Fair enough, but we still need the channels team to fix the authentication error as right now I have about 20+ channels that I can't access through channels now.

Not sure if they can reach out directly to the Xfinity team and become a development partner where they can get documentation or heads up when things change. I also don't know if it's actually Comcast that changed of the individual channels such as CNN, TruTV, MLB, etc.. and it's just using the xfinity login credentials to get access directly from the channels themselves.

I'm hoping a channels developer will see our thread and review the logs that were sent in and fix this. They seem to be pretty fast at putting out new builds.

It's a royal pain to have to go to the individual apps outside of channels to watch them and plus can't record shows on any of those channels as well.

The way that TVE in general—and also through Channels—works is:

  • Network website requests authentication
  • Cable/OTT provider is submitted as authenticator
  • Authentication is re-directed to provider's authentication system
  • User(/Channels) submits login credentials
  • Provider authenticates user
  • Cookie with limited—usually 30 days—authentication is saved to client device
  • Provider re-directs back to network website
  • Network site reads the (new/refreshed) cookie to authenticate user
  • Stream starts

The authentication all happens on the provider's own website. What Channels has to do is parse the page looking for certain elements/input fields to place your login information into as part of the handshake needed to (re-)authenticate for a particular network. If the provider changes their auth system, then Channels has to work around these new changes. It's basically whack-a-mole on a multinational media conglomerate scale.

So, Channels hasn't made your TVE channels inaccessible. They just haven't moved as quickly as you like to hit Comcast's constantly moving target for your satisfaction

Well said. Just would be nice if they could have a relationship with Xfinity / Comcast to get a heads up when they play whack-a-mole. They could say look we have x thousand customers and they are mutual customers so let's not make their lives miserable every time you make a change.

The other issue that happens every few weeks is I get an email from Comcast saying I need to change my password. Clearly something in the way Channels is authenticating is triggering their security to think someone is trying to hack my account.

I'm positive there has to be a way that Channels could contact Xfinity and say what do we need to do to make sure our customers don't constantly get flagged. Just thinking out loud here.

My Xfinity TVE stopped working this week. When I logged into the Xfinity website, I was prompted to change my password due to “suspicious activity”. TVE would not reauthenticate with Xfinity with the new credentials. I tried and failed enough times with TVE that Xfinity prompted another password change.

I haven’t been able to add back Xfinity as a new source.

What is weird is that a lot of channels like TNT TBS Syfy TLC Bravo all Disney and many others are working for me. So it is not fully down. I have 136 channels working.

All my sports channels are working ESPN FS1 NBCSN etc ...

I think you're just lucky that some of your cookies are still around for some channels.

I am working on a fix and will have a test build later this afternoon.

All channels working Scan was fast ... Thank You.

updated to 2021.03.22.1958- the web gui/settings said it was verifying access to 2/213 (nbc?) for an awful long time. maybe 6 minutes. i reloaded the page and under activity i see it verifying access to 124/213. it continued at a normal speed. Then the Activity changed to Fetching missing guide data and stayed there for what felt like too long. The log shows it index all the way out to 04/07 10:30am. so i refreshed the page again and Activity is Idle.

Firefox 86.0.1 on win10.

But xfinity is working!!
