My experience with Plex DVR (file manager/playback) over the last year has been mediocre at best.
Found that playback of mpeg2 files results in stalls, spinner etc. when trying to ffd/rew (through commercials) unless one has a tremendously high powered server. I’ve tried with an iMac i-7, Shield and Qnap 251A. None are acceptable as Plex only utilizes the CPU of the server…doesn’t leverage capability of clients and worse Plex doesn’t efficiently utilize HW capabilities for transcoding of mpegts files from the server nor have they instituted an effective server transcoder for these files.
This is despite numerous posts on the Plex forums. Hoping that Plex might have made improvements in the past several months, I did opt in for a lifetime sub (discounted) last month. After 3 weeks of again trying to utilize I requested a refund (which was issued).
The only reason to add Plex (for me) was to utilize as a media manager…I do have mpeg2 files from a variety of sources. As Channels is not intended as a media manager I wasn’t able to add these files to the Channels DB. I needed a playback solution for all of these files. Hoping to replace the other mpeg2 files with Channels recordings, as Plex wasn’t the solution, neither as a DVR nor media manager.
Channels for me is the best DVR solution. Playback is flawless, comm skip is innovative and works great (not available on any other solution), advanced pass set up is excellent (again not available in others), scheduling (conflict resolution) is the easiest and many other features make Channels well worth the monthly cost.
YMMV, however Channels is also the very best for my non technical family. I almost never have to intervene, all are able to use without guidance. Never hear complaints. Stability has been rock solid for over a year. Priceless!
