YIO, now Unfolded Circle (new universal remote)

Well, I don't know if "ship" is the right word. It's about to start a kickstarter project. And based on the Remote 2, it could be many, many months before it ships.

I never bought the 2. But I did sign up for the alert when the kickstarter starts because I'm considering getting the 3. It's the perfect intersection of my home automation obsession and my home theater obsession. Anyone here have the 2? Thoughts?

Also take a look at the Cantana Haptique, it’s very much in the same ballpark. Poised to take over where Logitech Harmony left off:

My immediate reaction was that it looks like an old Motorola flip phone. And I'm not so sure about their attention to detail. Ironic that they spelled intelligent wrong.

I'll keep an eye on it though, and see how it turns out! Thanks for sharing!

Yep, here it is: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/marton/unfolded-circle-remote-3

Thanks! I'm actually already backing it! I signed up within the first 20 minutes of the offer and I'm still over 1000 on the list. Are you signed up @Fofer?

No, I’m not. Just keeping an eye on it at the moment.

Hello community - just checking in on this thread to see if there are any other users here? I received my Remote 3 last week after backing the Kickstarter and love it. What a fantastic piece of hardware.

Naturally, I am interested in possible integrations with Channels - anyone else?

Nice! Mine should be arriving within the next few weeks. Give me details! What do you love about it?

Build quality is brilliant - single slab with premium feel. UI is very responsive and the screen is great.

I found the web configurator intuitive once familiar with the components. It also found my devices without manual input so setup was a breeze.

Activities are instant - such a difference compared to my Harmony Elite.

There are some teething issues - WiFi disconnects, and i had an issue with my mesh network. These are being sorted by the team though, so hopefully we will have an update in a couple of weeks.

Let me know when yours arrives Mike - happy to help if you have problems!

Thanks @Zav13r! I appreciate the offer!

And as far as your initial question about plans to integrate Channels - I think most of my interaction with Channels would be via controlling my Apple TV with the remote. Although I could see adding some buttons to quickly navigate to On Now, Up Next, etc. using /api/navigate/:section_name from the Channels API.

I just haven't really thought this through yet because I'm not sure how the remote UI looks and works, but I don't know if I want to always have Channels-specific buttons displayed if I am watching a different app like Plex or Netflix for example.

Is it able to connect to your Apple TV over Bluetooth as a keyboard device?

It can connect to Shield via Bluetooth as a device (similar to Harmony), so assume the same for Apple TV.

What i have now is a BT remote entity in my Channels activity on the R3. Then button mappings for Guide, DVR etc using keyboard commands - this works well.

What im missing is media info for Channels to see now playing on the remote (not essential, but nice). That way i have two pages, one for Plex when using that, and one for Channels when using TV.

@Zav13r My remote arrived last week! There was a bit of a learning curve getting it set up, but it is looking good now. The battery life is pretty terrible, but otherwise I am loving it.

Where did you finally land with your Channels integration? If you haven't had any luck with it, I have some ideas if you are a Home Assistant user.

Glad to hear it has arrived @_Mike. Ive still been fiddling with mine, too, but am finally pretty happy with it. Battery life here doesnt seem so terrible - couple of things you could try:

  • reduce the backlight brightness. I found this far too high by default
  • check that active wifi scanning is off

In the end, i settled with a couple of scripts in HA that i expose to the remote and am not too bothered about a missing Channels integration. For button mapping Ive relied heavily on the colour button shortcuts similar to what i had with the Harmony.

If youve not tried already, the beta firmware does open up a few more options worth exploring such as remote IR blaster.
