The touch screen of the iOS device can be utilized a la Youtube.
How about fast forward when you tab on the right side of the screen and rewind on the left side of the screen?
So you won’t have to bring down the control window.
It will also prevent accidentally hitting the “pause” button in the middle instead of ff or rewind, which happens a lot with my deteriorating hand-to-eye coordination.
The iOS app has a mechanism I like even better than YouTube. Swipe right to fast forward, swipe left to rewind.
