ZapperBox roadmap - channels mention

Zapperbox roadmap

A very interesting link. Obviously, there are some major to-do's here, and DRM is a non-starter (probably forever), but it's good to see Channels in their mentions.

"Support for ATSC 3.0 encrypted recordings is up to the media server OEMs like Plex and Jellyfin. If they don't step up to the plate, you can always use a Zapper Mini. Below is a diagram of how a Home Media Server running zApp would be set up."

"Step up to the plate", hah. Anything with DRM will not be served up to Channels DVR or the others unless they independently gain approval from the corporate cartel running this scam, and so far that requires secure hardware.

I'm running ZapperBox in parallel with Channels DVR to compare ATSC-3 reception during rain and other interference here. Overall it's still very early-stage and doesn't compete with Channels DVR at all in design, features, or reliability.

Ehh...once again unless they have some of bridge software that can handle DRM then its not gonna work with Channels. It would just be an overpriced HDHR Flex 4K if this is their gameplan.

Plex may support DRM but Emby, JF and Channels won't in the near future. JF is FOSS and unless some billionaire wants to chip in on FOSS software, then its not gonna happen.

Yep. DRM is the issue here. It's at least nice to see another hardware vendor looking at Channels as a destination, not that it actually fixes the issue

"Quad tuner operation requires a mandatory guide-data subscription priced at $50/year."

UGH - another annual subscription. Live TV just isn't worth it anymore.

If it'll provide Channels support, then you don't really need the guide if you're using Channels or Schedules Direct. The non-starter is gonna be the lack of DRM bridge and thats the reason why I don't bother with these boxes. Its Tivo 2.0 all over again with less features and more BS

I don't need the guide, but it says it is mandatory at $50/year for the 4 tuner version.

Yeah...that's tivo-esque. Other models don't require that but yeah, theyre on some hard stuff if they think people are gonna pay that
