Hide channel numbers!

I was thinking about this popular request yesterday as I futzed around with Plex. There's so much I don't like about how that app handles things -- especially compared to Channels -- but one thing I saw that I did like, was how their grid guide handles channel numbers. It only displays for the channel your focus is on. That seems like a thoughtful compromise:

It's funny that is what I hate about plex guide when scrolling quickly I prefer channel numbers.

I also like how in Plex when you go back to the guide the video still plays in the background. That would be cool if Channels could do that.

Yeah, different strokes for different folks. For a feature like this to work for everybody, ideally it would be a user-configurable setting, per client. For example:

Grid Guide Settings:

  • Show all Channel Numbers
  • Hide all Channel Numbers
  • Reveal Highlighed Channel Number only

The exception would be channels that have no logo, for whatever reason. They'd just have to display the channel number.

Yes, that interface looks and feels pretty cool. With Channels, the closest approximation is enabling Picture-in-Picture, which works pretty well on tvOS, as we go back to browse around the guide.

I'm all for new, visual style in the guide, though!

It’s been there for years on iOS but I don’t use it.

That doesn't really do what you think it does.

:person_shrugging:

It's there on tvOS too, and I don't use it either. That applies to the "On Now" thumbnails only. Toggling it off, assuming artwork is available, means each channel in that source will show a thumbnail for what's playing now. Toggling it on, means it just shows the channel logo. Again, this only applies to the "On Now" section. This setting does not apply to the Guide, what we're talking about, at all.

YES!!!! I want to channel surf while TV plays and PiP is NOT the solution.

Plex doesn't let you do that either, though. When you select a new channel via Plex's guide, the video playing in the background comes to the foreground. How do you even "channel surf" in Plex? Up/down on the remote doesn't do the trick.

At least with Channels, channel surfing works, and I can also leave the PIP window playing, choose another channel in the guide, and the PIP window remains, now playing the new channel. And Channels' interface also gives us the Quick Guide too, for surfing the guide while a channel plays in full-screen.

There's certainly room for improvement, but overall the usability of Channels in this context still wins handily over Plex.

+1 CDVR is better then plex.

My issue with PiP is it sits over the screen rather then being incorporated with screen. The biggest issue is PiP does not pass wife aproval rating. Its just preference. I highly doubt im going back to Plex as main platform. Only thing plex is good for is piracy. Everything else CDVR is better. But the biggest pitfall on CDVR is lack of video when going back to the guide like it did when I had DISH.

Can’t believe no one has mentioned multi view yet.

Live PIP dual view has been discussed on this board hefore- the channels devs didn't think it was doable

Instead of that how about a "quick channel" change button allowing you to one button switch between two channels

You could be watching a game on Fox, switch over to CBS to check, n another game, then switch right back

That already exists at least on Android double tap pause play.

Well, Christmas came early for me ! Thanks!

Works Great

Been using channels for 6 years and didn't know it existed

We should start a thread on the little known gem in channels!
