Best Android Based Client

So I made a purchase of two more of these to put throughout the house.

I'm selling off 2 of 3 of my Apple TV's. Since the kids mainly use this and keep breaking these $100 remotes, it's best to give them a Tivo.

As for my primary viewing TV, I will have both setup. Apple and Tivo.

Any recommendations on a USB-C storage device? I want to enable longer pause times.

I use these with a 16gb card. 32gb cards work but when the buffer gets to big sometimes it gets wonky.

I can second this. Was using an SSD until our cat pissed on it. Now it's just a sad little flash drive. It can get overwhelmed sometimes if too much is happening for it

Tivo got a good update. More service options and the ability to take off prime all together.

Not bad!

That's subjective.

They updated their own software on the device, but not the device's firmware. The hardware decoder still has issues with some H.264 streams.

After tinkering for a while, I’ve disabled it.

It’s cool how it recommends stuff but the guide I can do without since I have channels.

Anyhow, I’m eager to get playing with the google tv. I want to test out it’s recommendations and how they will work for me.

HDR Fix is in beta now too. Have to swap devices as mine is on my non hdr 4k projector. Have to put it on the TV and see how it works.

I’ve heard.

I’ve detivo today. Kind of wish we had an area of recommendations centred around Canadian content/apps.

As of now I have rows recommending stuff based off app use. Which sucks. I want a universal experience like Tivo or google. Problem is google tv doesn’t have Netflix integration I hear. Tivo is centred around US content, requires their app, and pulls in their own guide of live tv....

I think if channels could make an area where it recommends tv and movies based off stuff we watch would be awesome. As of now I think it’s based off popular shows and movies of your favourite channels...

Lastly, the one thing I’m gaining over the Apple TV is google assistance show and movie recommendations which appear to work pretty good....

The Google TV aggregation stinks. Your whole home screen is nothing but recommended content, much of it is for services you don't pay for, some of it is sponsored content like hbo max paying for placement, and then it's some of the stuff for services you already pay for.

You can choose the the app rows you want. You can also use the tivo stream app if you want aggregated content recommendations. There really is no free lunch. Every platform/device has an agenda based on monitizing your viewing habits one way or the other. It's a fantasy thinking these are truly your "personal" devices.

Don't update the Android TV Home app. That is the default "launcher" . I have left my TivoStream to not auto update and update apps manualy avoiding that.
Go into system app settings, uninstall updates for that app, it reverts to factory version, which is quite old, but stil works fine. I side loaded the latest apk of that app, to the version just before they added that crap, still working fine.
u can find it on apkmirror, or apkpure.
I posted this exact thing in the thread about the TS4K on here.(i think, or was it on the Tivo forms??)
in there, i mention the exact version number of the app i use.

otherwise, u can install and use a different launcher

It won't update to the Google TV Home screen unless you manually do it yourself. You don't need to go to such measures. If I'm not mistaken, and I can be at times, it's associated with Android 10 which won't be coming to the TS4k any time in the near or mid distant future.

Incorrect. As my TS4K was set to auto update and it did in fact auto update to the new Android TV Home Launcher with ads, and i had to do what i described to revert to old version.

What u describe about an OS update is different. (and there also is the new Google TV OS with its new launcher, that looks the same as the updated to match older Android TV Home app, it is just a re-brand it seems)
The new add full launcher is not exclusive to the OS version.
The new Android TV Home screen with ads flooded out to many tv and stream boxes with Android 9 some time ago, i recall many threads and articles on it.
The Nvidia Shield, however, remains immune to the home screen change, despite having the same new Launcher app version.

Really? Auto updated from the standard android update?

not talking about os version/updates.
the stock Android TV Home launcher is just an app that update with all the other apps.

now if they do release a new OS update, that has the base system app version that is the new redesigned Google TV Home launcher with ads, then, sideloading the old app may not work.
But i have had 2 OS minor/security updates on my TS4K and the old launcher still remains and works fine.

Got'cha.

So I managed to get my TS4k to see a 32gb DataTraveler USB key. I was able to format it and use it as internal storage. Problem is, it's slow. Album is hanging to load from channels etc...

Is this standard behaviour with external keys?

Its usb 2.0 limited...so yes.

Well this isn't going to work for me then. I was hoping to increase my pause time. I assume the app needs to be locate on the internal storage to use the storage for pause?

You need to use a USB3 flash drive to get acceptable performance. Even though the device only has a USB2 chip, USB2 flash drives are too slow to TVE acceptable performance when used in this manner.

The same is true when using a OTG adapter with a Fire TV device.

(This is the device I used with a TS4K and had good results:

I've got three. One beta and two normal. I've taken every update out there. Have not seen hide nor hair of the Google TV launcher. From what I've read, GTV launcher is based on Android 10. So you can side load it, but you wouldn't get an auto update to it unless tivo updates to Android 10 which they have no plans of doing.

Your immaculate update would be the only one as someone else on tivo community or Reddit would have posted with pics already, and it'd become a thing which it hasn't.
