Beta: tvOS/iOS Richer views for Library Movies and Shows

Hi  We've been quiet this summer, but after this post we hope you understand why.

We've been hard at work at new presentations for Movies and TV Shows providing a richer experience.

Your movies and shows all now utilize gorgeous backdrops, logos, cast information, and related content in your Channels library in fresh designs and layouts on tvOS and iOS.

Here's some examples of what you should expect to see.

How do you get it?

You'll need to be on the latest Channels DVR Server pre-release and Channels TestFlight beta.

The richer metadata should already be available on your Channels DVR Server, but if you don't see it, do this to force a refresh on your library:

  1. Settings > General > Library Database > Maintenance
  2. Refresh Library Info

Give it some time as it pulls in and applies all the latest metadata for the shows and movies in your library.

Rich Metadata

We've been hard at work at a new metadata engine that supports content from multiple sources and allows us to mix metadata from multiple sources, allowing us to dress up the content in your library no matter where it came from.

Right now this means content from recordings (Gracenote) and Personal Media (TMDB) will all end up having the same sort of metadata and your experience will be the same no matter where it came from.

We've only just started down this path, and these new views are the first results of what we've done so far. Moving forward we'll be applying more of the metadata and supporting more sources.

Curation

While the backdrops and logos will be chosen automatically for you, they are absolutely editable just like art has always been in Channels.

If you don't like the backdrop or logo that was chosen for you, change it! If you do, we suggest right weighted art for backdrops, as it fits the design great.

What's even better, is you can now do this directly in the app! If you happen to land on a movie and don't like its backdrop, just use the Manage Art action and pick another backdrop. This is available for backdrop, logo, movie poster, and series art.

Updated UX

Besides the fact that these new views convey way more information, they're all browsable.

Movies

View exactly how much is left when resuming the movie. Jump directly to another movie in the franchise. Explore one of your curated collections that the movie might be in. View similar movies. Browse other movies a director has made. It's all just more fun, and exactly what a lot of you have been asking for...for years

TV Series

TV Series have leveled up even more in that we now put the next episode you should be watching front and center. No more manually scrolling to the next episode to watch, it's right there ready to watch.

TO DOs

This is not finished. But it's close enough that we are super excited to deliver it to you all. We still have a lot of work to do.

Here's a short list of major things that are not yet available:

  1. The new TV Series views are not yet available on iOS. :white_check_mark:
  2. Jumping to content via Siri Shortcuts have not been tested yet and may be broken. :white_check_mark:
  3. A lot of QA!

Thanks!

Thanks for being patient with us while we were finally able to deliver a richer experience. We're super excited to finally get it in your hands and can't wait to hear what you think about it.

Change is hard, but we think this is moving in a positive direction.

Looking Great!
What rating is that percentage on the Movies?

Another question as I found a few Movies recorded from Pluto have no poster/background

What is "right weighted art for backdrops" ?
Does that mean the right side contains most graphics and the left side is mostly blank?
Not sure, since the iOS view doesn't look like what you're showing.

Yes, the bottom and left side is partially obscured by the UI elements, so pick something that looks good with that being the case.

Just wanted to say this looks great! I love this direction you're going with the app.

Here is how it looks on my bedroom TV:

Looks awesome! Trying it out on an 11 inch and a 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Flawless so far on the 11 inch. On the 12.9 inch, the role of a person (Director, Writer, etc.) under Credits is cut off. (Not sure if this is where we are supposed to report bugs).

(EDIT: It hit me that maybe I have my text size increased in the general iPad settings, and that this might be a cause? I checked, and here was my setting:

I moved it one tick to the left, and things are still cut off a bit. Moving it two spots to the left fixes it)

AMAZING! Thank you xx

Looks lovely!

Please can we choose the country where the content ratings come from? We’re not in the US so they don’t make sense.

Perhaps this is quite personal but the awareness of the audio track and the ‘CC’ isn’t that important so would be nice to be able to remove those details.

We’ll be working on that in the future.

Beautiful work! :star_struck:

Looking forward to seeing this on Android... when you get to it.

Appears to be from the Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score (Popcornmeter)

It's based on what the metadata has and falls back. Here's the priority of what shows:

  1. Rotten Tomato Audience Score
  2. IMDB score
  3. TMDB score
  4. Gracenote score

This looks, and feels, great! I just clicked around for a few minutes, linking from cast and crew to other titles and enjoyed learning more about the titles in my library. It’s all implemented and laid out very elegantly. Nice work, thanks!

One thing I have always felt is true about the Devs for Channels - when they do make something different in the software, it's pretty rock solid. I know big changes take a while to accomplish and is a lot of work on the backend but the frontend result is pretty amazing. It's why I know if you decided to do some of my most wanted feature requests it will be very well done.

How do you change the Title that's displayed over the backdrop?
I have a movie titled "Winged Migration"

but when I display the details with the backdrop the title appears in German as NOMADEN DER LUFTE

That’s the Logo. Update it via web admin, or directly in the client.

Use the more button to get the context menu and go to Manage > Manage Art > Update Logo

any chance in putting the cast before the writer and director? it just look better having the cast first, some missing pictures are from the staff and are repeated. thanks.

I agree with @AeroR1 on the cast placement. Sounds like a little thing but it actually threw me a bit first time I looked at it and the main actor wasn't listed first.

I'm running the Apple TV 4K with the latest tvOS (18.5) and the latest Channels pre-release (2025.07.19.2021) and I refreshed the Library Info. I still don't see the Credits with the Actor's pictures. I do see the new score and other new items when I look at a movie.

Any idea why on my ATV 4K it doesn't display the Credits with actors pictures?
