Black Screen on APPLE TV

Lately the channel we are watching will go black. We hit the menu button on the APPLE remote and it says “exit to guide?” We say yes and then restart the show from the guide. This has happened in excess of 20X in the last three days.

I am on build 2018.09.28.1953

Anyone else?

Is this when watching recordings or live tv?

Is your Apple TV on Wi-Fi or wired?

Thank you. All the APPLE TV’s are wired. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern for recording or watching. It happens if no recording is going on and it happens when recording is happening. At least no pattern we can discern.

Looks like you have network issues.

You have a DVR on your shield looks like, and the Apple TV is streaming a transcoded 720p video through the DVR instead of directly. Did you set your Home Streaming Quality?

It is set at 1080p@10mbps I noticed after the APPLE upgrade some of my settings were different like tuner sharing. If this is a setting issue, please advise! Thanks!

What are the streaming quality settings in your channels app on the Apple TV? Home streaming should be set to original, so that it’s not transcoding.

That web streaming setting on the DVR is only in effect when using a non-client, like a browser. Each channels client has its own streaming setting.

All at Original

I went back and set them all back to original

Thank you.

Please go to bottom of the Settings tab and click Submit Diagnostics

I submitted logs from all 4 of the locations we run Channels from. All are hard wired ethernet and three are APPLE TV (one is 4K) and the fourth is Android from the NVIDIA Shield.

Since we rarely use the NVIDIA station, I don’t know if it exhibited any problems but the three APPLE TV stations did.

Thank you for the response.

The first problem is that you have two DVRs in your house. One is installed on the shield and another is on your PC. You need to pick one to use and uninstall the other one.

Second, is the problem still happening after you turned the quality to Original?

I did have one on the PC so I deleted it. That may explain a few things like shows recorded appearing and disappearing.

Let me run with the app for a few days and see what happens.

Thanks for your investigations.

Terry

We had three “connection lost” issues on one APPLE TV. I submitted a log.

I do not see Channels DVR in the app list on Windows to uninstall it. I see it in the start menu on Task Manager and disabled it from starting at START. I also see it in the hidden folder Program Data in the C: drive. How do I successfully uninstall it? Will just not starting it be sufficient? Thanks

You have to re-run the installer. Allegedly there’s an “uninstall” option in that.

It is a little goofy to uninstall. I ran the installer, said uninstall, it took me to a screen that said begin installation, installed the software and then gave me an option to turn off the DVR and uninstall, which it did. So it worked, eventually and I had to hang in there and trust. Thank you JSeymour.

I would recommend that you disable Tuner Sharing so your Apple TVs talk directly to the hdhomerun.

The DVR on the shield is losing its connection to the HDHR repeatedly, so you should check the connections between the HDHR and shield. Are they wired into the same physical switch?
