I've been having the same issue with X-Plore ever since you started doing the APK like this a month or two ago. It was super easy for me to update before, now it's a process....
So I just opened X-Plore and clicked on the .apk that is on my shields storage, it installs. It's only when I try to install it directly from Google drive. That is what you are trying to do?
Ok, so I've decided to start using OpenDrive, and Filelinked. The link in the original post will remain and stay up-to-date, but for those who want to keep everything done on their device, it will be Filelinked.
So, Filelinked not being available on the play store, here is the apk:

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do. Will give the filelinked method a shot. Giving the filelinked method a go now. Seems much easier this way, although the download speed is super slow, but I'll take it. Thanks!
I had to use ATFVDownloader to get filelinked to download and install on my Shield. The link above wouldn't install for me, but I was able to get filelinked to install by using http://get.filelinked.com in ATVFDownloader.
Yea, it's the opendrive or whatever. I can use any service as long as it's a direct download link, so suggestions are welcome on where to host it.

Why not use MEGA, instead of some obscure app that not many heard of or would use.
MEGA is wildly used to host and share files (both legally and illegally, as with any services)
I use MEGA and manage several accounts for various file shares/archives.
But, like i said, the Gdrive link works fine via web browser bookmark to access on my phone, so i have no issue using that every month or 2 when i bother to update my phone.
Its also the same way i get it on PC, and then just transfer the file to my Shield.
Ideally, would be nice to use the app itself to update it self, but like you said, you are not able to mange to tweak that feature.

I'm just gonna stick with the Filelinked. Give it a shot. Have a look around for some codes to other people's stuff, there's some pretty massive collections of stuff out there on Filelinked.

um? all i see is get DroidAdmin url and when i google that, i see the last update for that app was in 2018. Also, those links still don't work native for me, but does via Opera's VPN connection, and gives filelinked212.ak. guess my firewall/or custom DNS server is blocking it for some reason
EDIT: so, i did get the filelinked apk and put in on my Shield and entered the code.
Yea...ok, this makes this easier.
Filelinked is only slightly janky app, with a slight bit of ad gunk in it, but is tolerable enough for its purpose.
EDIT 2: I tried their beta apk, ver 2.1.8. Seems to work and look the same, but does not load the file images. not sure what else makes it beta, dont see any other features or settings.

Shame Nvidia doesn't have a real web browser on the Shield, all I've found suck. I simply have a share on the shield and xfer from my Win10 box.
Puffin is good. And sideloading chrome is good. I'm gonna stick with the drive link / Filelinked. I mapped my shields drive on my PC too, so I just drag and drop it over. If I want to xfer from my phone, I use AndSMB.
The goal was to have an app you can just download it, and Filelinked met the criteria. If it were on the play store, then easier. Tbh, I just wanted the link in the OP, I thought we were all at the point in our device usage where transferring a file to it shouldn't have to be explained, but I'm probably just being a dick. So, Filelinked it is! Lol

I usually just download the apk to my phone. Then upload the apk to my Onedrive. Then use the X-Plorer app to access my Onedrive and install it on my firestick and Chromecast.
