Closed caption/subtitles on my Apple TV stopped working after the latest update. I tried various video files and closed caption/subtitle does not appear on the screen.
My video files with external subtitles no longer work. But some of my video files with internal subtitles still work fine. Possible a bug that was introduced in the latest update?
I was just going to post the same thing. My Apple Tv 4k, no longer has captions for imported files that have a same-named .srt file for the caption info. Running tvOS 18.4.1 (22L261)
@eric The captions for those same programs WORKS on my FireTv 4k MAX stick. Just not on the Apple tv, since the last update.
Captions do work on the Apple tv IF it's a recorded program from my HdHomerun 4k, or various .m3u streaming stuff. Just NOT with .srt captions.
See if this build fixes it.
I'm still having issues with CC/subtitles. I can see metadata picking up my video files with internal subtitles by tagging my video with CC logo on the information screen. All of my videos with external subtitles CC logo does not show up on the information screen. This makes me think that the metadata isn't picking up the external subtitles. Everything was working fine until I updated the Channels app through the Apple TV app store.
Did you try the beta that was released in response to your bug report as mentioned directly above your post?
It didn't fix it for me on my Apple Tv 4k, sorry. It does still work on my Firestick 4k Max, even .srt type captions.
Yes, I did, and it didn't fix them.
Yes, not working for me on latest stable app via app store & beta app via testflight.
The new build mentioned was a server prerelease, or a client app build.
You’ll need to update your Channels DVR Server to the latest prerelease to test the efficacy of the attempted fix.
Not sure what Bonecrusher did, but I did update the Channels DVR server to the latest pre-release above: 2025.05.07.2131
It didn't fix the captions issue on the Apple Tv 4k. The same issue that he's having. My Apple Tv 4k is running app: Channels v6.2.3
Please submit diagnostics and report which particular movie that has sidecar subs, is not working.
Feel free to DM me if you want to keep that private.

And it's ANY imported video file of any type (mkv, avi, etc), with .srt captions that no longer works on the Apple Tv 4k. mkv's with embedded subs works fine, BUT, if I use a sidecar .srt caption of a different language for the same file that the embedded captions work on, that .srt one doesn't work (but does work on a Firestick 4k Max (original model).
Please tell me the name of a movie in your library that you have tried and it did not work.
Sent DM.
I have so many pictures to share that I'm just going to DM them to you instead of posting them here.
Anybody else with an Apple Tv device have this issue beside Bonecruscher52 and me?
Have you updated to the latest pre release? v2025.05.07.2131 has some subtitle fixes in it. Nevermind, I see you did update.

Good news, everyone! I've done some testing, and I think I have something for you to share. I discovered that TestFlight lets you revert to older builds of apps. After fiddling around with beta versions of Channels that are older than the current release, I found out that external subtitles were working fine up to the 3.12.1723 build. Then, they broke after the 3.12.2049 build. Once that beta app stopped working, I switched to using a stable app from the App Store. The stable app was also working just fine until the recent update.
