Closed caption/subtitles not working after the latest update

Not sure what Bonecrusher did, but I did update the Channels DVR server to the latest pre-release above: 2025.05.07.2131

It didn't fix the captions issue on the Apple Tv 4k. The same issue that he's having. My Apple Tv 4k is running app: Channels v6.2.3

Please submit diagnostics and report which particular movie that has sidecar subs, is not working.

Feel free to DM me if you want to keep that private.

Logs: dd014234-30a4-4a47-8ea0-85c5a1ddc6f4

And it's ANY imported video file of any type (mkv, avi, etc), with .srt captions that no longer works on the Apple Tv 4k. mkv's with embedded subs works fine, BUT, if I use a sidecar .srt caption of a different language for the same file that the embedded captions work on, that .srt one doesn't work (but does work on a Firestick 4k Max (original model).

Please tell me the name of a movie in your library that you have tried and it did not work.

Sent DM.

I have so many pictures to share that I'm just going to DM them to you instead of posting them here.

Anybody else with an Apple Tv device have this issue beside Bonecruscher52 and me?

Have you updated to the latest pre release? v2025.05.07.2131 has some subtitle fixes in it. Nevermind, I see you did update.

Good news, everyone! I've done some testing, and I think I have something for you to share. I discovered that TestFlight lets you revert to older builds of apps. After fiddling around with beta versions of Channels that are older than the current release, I found out that external subtitles were working fine up to the 3.12.1723 build. Then, they broke after the 3.12.2049 build. Once that beta app stopped working, I switched to using a stable app from the App Store. The stable app was also working just fine until the recent update.

Wish they would announce the stable builds
https://getchannels.com/releases/#tvos Version 6.2.3 (April 29th, 2025)
in the the Beta Notes

Looks like I'm going to stick with beta app via 3.12.1723 build instead of stable app for now. So happy to see external subtitle support working again :grinning:. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.

Not sure how to load beta Apple tv apps, so I'll have to wait and hope. Guess I'll have to switch to just using my Firestick 4k Max for captions, instead of my Apple Tv.

To join the Channels Beta beta, open the link on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac after you install TestFlight.

I think you need an iOS device to join the beta. I used my old iphone.

@Bonecrusher52 Can you double-check that it was between 3.12.1723 and 3.12.2049 that it broke? I looked at the changes between those builds and nothing jumped out to me as related to this.

Yes, I just did a test on my Apple TV using the same video file with a sidecar subtitle (.srt and .ass). Both formats (.srt and .ass) work fine in 3.12.1723 but not in 3.12.2049.

I've never had an iPhone, the Apple Tv 4k is the first and only Apple device I've ever had. I got it specifically for Channels.

You can email the devs and they will send you a code. See the note at the bottom of the webpage Channels — Beta Program

Note: The Apple Beta Program requires an iOS device to join through the Testflight app. If you only have an Apple TV, please email us.

@Bonecrusher52 thanks for confirming. I'm checking it out.

This latest TestFlight build should fix the issue. Thanks everyone for reporting this and helping to track down the issue.
