I have notice that guide data can be setup via HDHomeRun DVR subscription. I an active subscription but Channels DVR keeps stating no subscription. Is this guide option really available or is it in the works.
It is available. But I found some stuff missing like HD flag and a few others. I see no reason to use it.
After yesterday issue with Channel Icons and images missing yesterday I would like to at least have this as backup plus the guide HD Guide shows all the correct Channel Logos and don't see any missing that I tune to, Channels DVR guide provider has several missing Channel Logos for several days. I don't care about HD flags or other things. I know what channels are HD or SD. This feature keeps stating no subscription. I do have a DVR set up and working on my network.
I wonder why it says that ... I too have a DVR subscriptions and the guide works. I see your point about logos. Just retested it and it worked on my end maybe support can chime in.
I saw an article today where they felt the software was clunky.
lol. The HDHR software is a disaster. No one in the family accepted it. The ux designer clearly hates people.
The article author, whom I think is just looking to be honest, implies the unit software as primitive and limited compared to third-party platforms like Channels and Plex.
Moreover, options with the Scribe or Servio are only designed to run HDHomeRun’s own recording service, thus no Channels. Real shame because "the picture quality (with Scribe or Servio) is on par with direct antenna input, and the system supports 5.1 surround sound" as well and expandable.
So, by using Channels, I'm sacrificing video quality? I'm new to all this. I have some learning to do.
I got it figured out. I not using the software just using the guide data. Yesterdays issue was not the only time that logo's and images disappear. At least this way my OTA channels Logo will still show and guide will update when Channels servers go down or internet goes down.
Are all your hdhomeruns registered with your dvr subscription?
I got it figured out. Had to unlink old subscription and relink new subscription with the HDHomeruns. thanks for replying.
I think the post has to do with guide data for those that are subscribed or still on kickstarter. not the APP.
One thing that is great about the HDHomeRun dVR you can run multiple instances on different types of machines and it will record to the one with the most space and it treats the recordings as if they were recorded on 1 Drive. If you lose one of the HDHomerun server devices the others will continue to record.
Built in disaster recovery ...
Since I have two tuners I want to have this as a provider to one of them so when Channels servers go down again that my local channels logos don't disappear. Everything was normal when i woke up and watch the morning news. Got to work and connected to my DVR, I thought I had an issue with my DVR that I actually deleted the sources several times and when that didn't work that I totally trashed my DVR and started over. I see that there was an issue with their server a couple of hours later, and that's why all the images disappear. I mean everything, meta data. show images, movie images. I really thought that my PI crapped out on me. So this would be backup at least. I agree that their software totally sucks but their guide at least works even when I loose internet. I didn't realize that these servers were so dependent on the internet. Seems to me that the server downloads images to cache and would reside there till the server no longer needs them. We had storms here yesterday and I was watch the local coverage. When the internet was interrupted, My guide channel logos all went away in a matter of minutes, WTF. I also have issues with Fire TV's when they lose internet you don't get the home screen with it and its a night mare to start an app when that happens.
Can I run one with Emby server running on the same machine
Of course, there are many drawbacks, too.
- The HDHomeRun app will not even start up unless the device has an active internet connection.
- Only the next 4 hours of recording rules/schedule are available. All future recordings and rules are stored on SiliconDust's servers.
- In order to be used with their DVR software, your tuners and computers running the DVR software need to regularly "phone home" to get a new DeviceAuth token.
- Recordings made on Servio and Scribe cannot be easily accessed/downloaded for offline use.
- The hard drives in the Servio and Scribe devices can only be used with SiliconDust's DVR.
I think the Local OTA tuners on Channels are 1080 with 5.1 audio. Only the TV streams are 2.0 channels. There is definite a quality difference between the Local TV via Antenna and The Local TV via TVE.
Image caching was added to the server in the latest release. It is only enabled in the tvOS app at the moment as we flesh it out and confirm it works well.
Yes
No, not sacrificing anything video quality. The HDHomeRun app and Channels use the same streams from the tuners.
But they do not use the same decoders. I also find using Exoplayer to View Channels recordings the quality is better.
Excellent. Thank you. The article suggests that with Scribe and Servio that one must use its onboard system (not Channels). I presume you refer to other HDHomeRun devices.
