Just curious about this one. If the movie is over what is the point of skipping the credits if I'm going to stop watching it anyway?

You're clearly not a superhero fan! 
Most or all of the Marvel and DC movies have additional mid or post credit scenes. It would be nice to skip past the credits and go straight to that.

Need to start compiling a database of movies and episodes with the timestamps of where to skip from and to.
I think it is done more dynamically than that.
This is on the Plex site:
When enabled, your Plex Media Server will analyze the beginning of each episode, looking for segments that match between the episodes. This is primarily done by analyzing the audio of the file, which would find a common theme song, for instance. Matching is done per season, as many shows have a different intro segment for each season.
