New gigabit broadband (router Adtran 814-v6) causing network connectivity issues with channels

Hi

Hopefully someone can help me out or point me in the right direction, above subject really says what’s happening.

Connectivity issues on iPhone 11, if i switch off Wi-Fi & go 4G I can watch channels remotely with no issues. Not sure if this helps but here is the bottom few lines from the log…

Also I’ve just tested an iPad and the misses phone and they working fine on WiFi so it seems this issue is directly related to my phone? Which is strange cause I can run any channel from my HDHOMERUN via Plex??? So weird

Are the HDHR and dvr plugged into the same physical switch or router?

Yep Mac-Mini port 1 HDhomerun port 2 Apple TV port 3.
Port 4 5 port switch with Xbox, Hive hub, hue hub and my win 11 workstation.

Although all of these were plugged in exactly the same way in my old router EE smart hub and i’ve never had an issue and have been with you a good few years.very strange it seems it’s low signal for the Apple TV sometimes though my phone is unwatchable. Yet I can put my iPad and my misses phone on next to my phone and happily watch channels on the same network.

Is it a switch or a router? May need a reboot.

Try running a speedtest between the dvr and Apple TV? See Channels Support - Channels Apps FAQ

It’s an Adtran 814-v6 router and I’ve tried rebooting it didn’t help, tried rebooting my phone too. And the switch (which is connected to port 4 of the router that’s also had a reboot.

I even restarted the Mac-Mini where channels lives and all the other stuff. Any other ideas?

Seems very low for home network..

What should it be? I didn’t even know you could run a speed test, it’s just channels that is being affected just tried to watch it on Apple TV, got network issues pop up in right corner. Ran the same HD channel on Plex and it’s running at 1080p @10Gbps.

Is there any internal routing cache in channels? All I’ve done is changed router. Although everything has either been restarted or rebooted. I’m stumped. On my old router it was the other way around plex tv was unwatchable and channels was perfect, gutted.

on a gigabit network, if directly connected with ethernet, you should be getting above 900mbps transfers in the speed test.

for WiFi clients, this will be reduced by the speed/reliability of your WiFi. So, if you don't have good WiFi signal, aren't on 5GHz band, or are using a channel that your neighbors are using, you will have problems. Would explain issues with the phone.

What Apple Tv model? is it the older one with a slow 100mbps port and not gigabit?

From my Apple TV 4K, i get:
996

3.25

0.48

Your latency and jitter are extremely bad for a wired connection.

The numbers you posted are far more alike to wifi numbers, poor wifi.

If only Channels DVR is effected, then the issue may lie with your server device and its networking.
First, replace the cable with a new good quality ethernet cable.

Also, new router may not be auto negotiating the proper link speed. Check each device to see f it is running at 1gigabit full duplex. Check the Router's management system also if it is one that is advanced enough to report such stats.

If I do an internet speed test I’m currently getting 650 down 430 up ping 2.
I’m guessing the router 814v2 should have gigabit ports in the manual it just says lan 1-4 and all 3 HDHomerun, Mac-Mini & Apple TV are all directly plugged into the router.

So I’m not sure what could be throttling stuff as there is nothing in between?

The download speed from my phone is currently about 300mbps, yet if I run channels I get tuner connectivity issues and lost signal messages.

I’m guessing I’ll have to strip it all down and find out what’s going on.

If anyones got any tips on what diagnostics i should be running to find out what the hell is going on with my network. Don’t be shy.

Internet speed test means nothing. That just tests speed from WAN to LAN, your internet to the device, not internal LAN to LAN, device to device.

Those all in one Gateway routers, especially if it is from an ISP, suck.

You could try this, get a 5 or 8 port gigabit switch, they are pretty cheap these days on Amazon or even at Best Buy, etc, and hook all your devices to the switch (not the router), and connect the switch to one of the routers LAN ports. That moves everything to its own dedicated switch, and the router is then only used for WAN access.
I recommend TP-Link, have good experience with them)

in the mean time, make sure the router you have, its firmware is up to date.
And check that the wired devices are infact using wired connection, not wifi.

Totally agree with speedingcheetah.
Just logged in and was about to post the same thing.
You want your high bandwidth connections to go through the same gigabit switch.

Indeed, built in switches on AIO routers are trash.
Only exception is some pro-consumer grade routers, like top end Asus ones, and more enterprise level hardware, like Ubiquiti. My ER12 has a built in 12port switch and SFP.

Edit: Although, I have not had any network issues with having a client device being multiple switches and long cable runs away from the Channels DVR server, but, I am using Ubiquiti hardware and 6a cables, not typical to average home consumer.

I do have a 5 port gigabit switch. Guess where that is?

It’s plugged into port 4 of my router but I’ve got my Hive hub, hue hub Xbox & win 11 workstation plugged in there

I guess I’ll try repurposing my switch tomorrow

And yep checked the wired/wireless settings. The home run is Ethernet only, I’ve disabled WiFi on my Mac-Mini (channels server), and the Apple TV is on Ethernet too?

Ok thanks

I’m gonna pull it all down tomorrow and try to get everything working

Thanks for all your suggestions

I would also recommend if you purchase another Gigabit switch, stay away from the cheaper ones.
I had problems with TP-Link and Trendnet. No issues with my Netgear GS105 and GS108.

Ok thanks

Just leading on from what you said about WiFi interference, this new router is really struggling with WiFi connections all my 5GHz devices connect. None of my 2.4GHz devices will connect, would this cause these issues? I have contacted them about it and am waiting for a response.

If so I can’t wrap my head around why as all the devices are wired.

I just checked and the macs WiFi is disabled, as mentioned hdhomerun is Ethernet only and Apple TV is connected via Ethernet?

One of the options from this provider is bridge mode so I could use my own router it’s looking like I’m gonna have to go down that route unless it turns out the router has faulty WiFi but if so how could it affect channels. I think I’m gonna have to disable the radios on the router and see what happens

Ok I’ve just disabled both 2.4ghz and 5GHz radios on the router and everything is working perfectly now apart from I don’t have WiFi.

So it seems it’s the router, maybe I’ll can add a WiFi access point and keep the built in radios disabled.

Any advice on workarounds would be appreciated, this is an amazing deal and I don’t wanna go back to good old 15mbps EE’s useless broadband
