Hi to all. I'm trying out for the first time Channels. I have it checked in settings detect commercials. But when I recorded one tv show, commercials still there. What did I do wrong? Thanks all.
stupid me I found it but tested it, NOPE not removing commercials, so back to square one. Can y=someopne show me, please?
In the settings area of the Channels app you can enable automatic skip
Channels uses an external third-party program called Comskip to detect commercials in recordings. Channels takes the information from this program, and creates "bookmarks" for the start/end of commercial segments. Using the DVR's web interface, or using a client on an Apple device, you can see where a commercial segment was detected in a recording, as well as modify/correct sections that were incorrectly flagged.
By default, the Channels clients will present a "Skip Commercial" button when a detected commercial segment starts during playback. In the settings you can change this to either automatically skip the detected segments, or to allow you to manually skip the commercials using the remote.
On its own, Channels does not remove commercials. However, it does provide the ability to generate files that other programs (such as MCEBuddy, Ffmpeg, and others) can use to actually remove the flagged commercial segments from the recording.
Sorry, in the settings i only see detect commercials, where would i see automatic skip. I'm looking at it via my PC.
The settings for commercial skipping are in the client, not the DVR. In your Channels client (the program you use to view TV/recordings), go to Settings > Playback > Commercial Skipping. There you should be able to select between "Automatically", "Skip Button", and "Manually", with "Skip Button" being the default.
It's in the Channels app for Android or Apple, which is what we recommend for watching your media.
Do i have to look for this program Comskip, sorry I'm a rookie? And I appreciate everyone's help.
Thank you again, but i open Channels DVR in firefox. Where will i find the client? Again thank you.
No. It is included with the DVR server. If you have "Detect Commercials" selected in the DVR settings, Channels will automatically run the program on each program after it finishes the recording. You don't need to do anything additional or special.
You can get the Channels client for:
racameron, i went to my iPhone and found it, again please forgive me don't like wasting anyone's time. Will i be able to remove commercials on my computer desktop?
If you so choose, yes you can. However, that requires a separate program.
On its own, Channels will mark commercial segments. When you watch recordings from a Channels client, you can skip those commercials. But Channels does not remove/cut those commercial segments from the recording. The recordings are an exact copy of what was broadcast/recorded; they are unedited.
so if i setup iphone to automatically commercial skip, will that show up when i record thru desktop? Thanks again.
Thank you so much, last question if you use Plex, is it bad to have both of them. I like Channels features.
I don't understand the question.
If you watch a recording on your iPhone using the Channels app, and have "Automatically" set for the "Commercial Skipping" setting, the player will skip over the detected commercial segments. (On the iPhone, it will seem as if the commercial segments have been removed from the recording. However, the actually file of the recording will still contain the commercials; the Channels apps just know what is a commercial and won't play those segments.)
No. I consider Plex and Channels to be programs that fulfill two different functions. I have and use both. They will both happily co-exist on the same system, without any problems or issues.
Your the Best. Thank you so much. I will be checking how to use it. I will need to use out of home outside my home network, i will search how to use outside. Thanks budy.
Check out Channels' great support documents:
They cover many basic aspects, as well as address advanced functionality (including remote access for when you are away from home).
Thank U Again
Its a shame that Channels does not perform post recording comskip and remove the commercials. It forces us Plex users to have to post recording removal with MCEBuddy. Kind of lame and I hope someday Channels will integrate with Roku or at least do commercial removal without a 3rd party process
