I get FOX OTA via HDHR Quatro. Using Fire stick new model. Plex displays FOX pretty good, Channels Plus is TERRIBLE, like 30fps or worse. Football is unwatchable. FOX Sports streaming is great too. Do I have a setting wrong? Does having YoutubeTV loaded have anything to do with it, perhaps replacing OTA with YoutubetV Fox?
Does the problem only affect FOX? In particular is ABC affected too? (both are almost always 720p channels, so I'd expect similar outcomes for both of them)
He's probably viewing the Channels TVE FOX channel instead of the Channels HDHR FOX channel.
At least for me the Fox TVE stream is 60Hz. Maybe it depends on your Fox station though?
I rarely watch ABC so I don't know about the quality on Channels, I usually record it on Plex or Tablo. Both ABC and FOX are broadcast in 720P here. I only notice the severe stutter on Channels Plus Fox. Plex is good as is Fox Sports direct streaming app. I can't say about Tablo as I rarely watch anything real time on Tablo.
One person implies Channels Plus would replace OTA Fox with YoutubeTV Fox. Why would it not replace ALL my OTA with the YoutubeTV if that were the case.
When you say Channels Plus FOX looks terrible...
What device are you watching it on and what is the channel number?
Is it recordings or Live TV or both that look bad.
You can get FOX using Channels Plus from an OTA HDHR (Duo/Quattro), Cable HDHR (Prime), TVE feed or Locast feed.
I said in my original question I had HDHR Quatro to Server to Fire stick. Firestick apps using this are Plex and Channels Plus. I also have YoutubeTV and synced it with Channels Plus. Firestick has YoutubetV app and FOX Sports app too.
Are you viewing the Channels Plus TVE Fox channel or the Channels Plus HDHR Quatro Fox channel?
i.e. If you don't know then what is the channel number you're viewing
OTA channels from your Quatro would be like 10.1, 10.2, etc.
TVE channel numbers are in the 6000's, like 6002.
My TV is in use (wife's football). On my tablet it shows as the OTA Fox 12.1
And do you only have that issue with the channel on the Fire stick? Do you have tuner sharing enabled in the client settings?
I will only use Channels on the Firestick so channel sharing is not enabled. I am in a month trial period and trying to decide if I want to stay. I love the quick change (wife switches between games and complains about Ples, Tablo and YoutubeTV change times. Problem is FOX is a constant goto for games.
If you don't have channel sharing enabled on the firestick Channels client it will connect directly to your HDHR tuner when watching Live TV.
Since OTA is high bandwidth mpeg2 I would suggest running the speedtest in the Channels app on the firestick to test the speed and latency between the firestick and the Channels DVR Server.
The HDHR tuner should be wired to the same switch or router the Channels DVR Server is wired to, preferably a Gigabit ethernet switch/router.
If your firestick is on WiFi make sure it's connecting to a 5GHz band on your router or access point.
Speed is 276Mbits, latency 7. HDHR is MOCA hard wire to Roku and to the Gateway wireless router(FIOS) next to the Firestick, connected to router on 5GHz band. I believe everything is set to original quality. I don't know what Fos broadasts as the just went ATSC 3 and info on ATSC 1 is hard to find.
OTA does have the highest bandwidth requirements, so my first guess on the issue is WiFi interference or throughput issues with the fire stick.
I would look at the strength= and the quality= in the ui when playing the channel. I have 2 towers in 2 different directions the channels from the closer get in the high 90s and are a better picture then my prime cc. The other tower gets in the high 60s and are basically unwatchable with constant stuttering.
How does the official HDHomeRun app look with Fox on the same FireTV?
Please click Support > Submit Diagnostics on the Channels app after watching FOX and seeing the problem. Then post your hdhomerun device ID
I am about 12 miles hiltop to hilltop with roof antenna from Poertland's towers. All are very strong and stable. I do not have HDDVR app on Firestick, only Roku. Frankly I don't use it and will let it expire.MBandwidth is not an issue, FIOS is 50/50, but not used at all when Channels is being used. Firestick works fine on everything EXCEPT Channels FOX. I am switching my de-interlace setting to linear.
I will do what tmm1 suggests a little later.
I had similar issues with Fox 13.1 in the Seattle area. Working with HDHR support, I found out that the tuners in the Quattro can become an issue -
"What happens is the HDHomeRun's internal distribution amplifier gets overloaded, rather than the tuner itself. Single tuner devices like TVs tend not to have an issue."
I ended up getting the new Quattro 4K ATSC 3.0 device which has Sony tuners (according to HDHR support), and everything works like a charm now. Although, with no ATSC 3.0 channels in my area, I am limited to two ATSC 1.0 tuners in the new device. Hasn't been an issue for me yet though.
I have considered the ATSC 3 offering, we have stations in Portland. What I lack is a 4K tv. I have a Plasma and will use till it dies, then OLED 4K will come. The only thing I see wrong in your answer is Fox works fine on Plex.
The two ATSC3 tuners in the Quattro 4K can tune ATSC1 without issue. So you have 4 ATSC1 tuners, or 3 ATSC1 tuners and 1 ATSC3 tuner, or 2 of each.
