Remote Streaming Away From Home - not working

Hello. I’ve had this vexing problem now for about 6 months. I’ve triple checked my router settings to make sure port 8089 is open. No matter what I try I cannot get either live OTA to stream or any TVE channels to stream. Local playback is no issue.

Any insights and thoughts appreciated.

Channels DVR setup

  • Mac Mini 2 cores / Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4278U CPU @ 2.60GHz (16 gig Ram)

  • 1 gigabit FiOS connection (Ethernet cat 6 backhaul from nodes to router)

  • Attempting remote access on iphone 14 pro max running on 5G AT&T cell.

On your iPhone safari browser disconnected from home WiFi and using att data does this successfully load?

No. WiFi disconnected - doesn’t load either in the safari browser or IOS Channels App.

While on home WiFi check 8089 here
https://portchecker.io/
Does it show open results “true”?

Yes. Results for 108.51.22.152:

  • 8089 - true

On the mini dvr settings try toggling to off then back to manual, verify server ip in the router forwarding is correct. Hopefully you set up a static ip for the mini. It might have changed on you. Are you running any firewall in the mini?

I did this yesterday. Toggle on/off. Yes, I have a static IP address for the Mac Mini.

Do you get all checkmarks if you go to dvr settings page support >troubleshooting

Thanks. Yup. All checks.

My guess is that it’s little snitch or firewall. Beyond disabling them to test that I don’t think I have any more suggestions

It seems, after toggling on/of port between Manuel and off - it’s really the HD Homerun tuner OTA channels that do not stream consistently. The TVE channels now appear to be streaming ok (for now). It’s so inconsistent.

Oh so you are able to load the app remote and see the guide and library ect, I was assuming the app wouldn’t load at all. You are just having issues loading a stream. Tve channels are typically smaller then ota. Try lowering playback quality in the app.

I see that you submitted diagnostics a little while ago and I see a successful remote stream. What is happening when it isn't working for you?

Edit: Sorry, looking into it further, I see that it was having trouble fetching the segments. I'm digging into this further...

Please try changing Transcoder to Software and see if that improve the situation. It looks like there's something funny going on with the hardware encoder.

Just as an FYI re: transcoder. You may want to set your clients to original quality especially if you have FIOS and you are not worried about metered upload. With LTE/5G/5GUW it's almost never necessary to transcode anymore IMHO.

I would advise against setting to Original if you don’t want to have to fidget with settings depending on what you’re doing.

Environments are variable enough that letting the Adaptive Bitrate system adapt will give the best hands-off experience.

I don't ever have to mess with anything, channels just works at original for me on every device. Where is adaptive bitrate? I just looked on ios and android and I just see Original and then 8Mbps etc...

Once you select anything lower than original it starts there and adapts down as needed. So if 4MB is chosen it starts at 4. If the bandwidth goes down enough the server steps down automatically

It used to be a manually enabled option, but it no longer is. The remote streaming to clients now always uses adaptive bitrates. The bitrate set in the client is the maximum; if the network connection degrades, then a lower bitrate is used.

Ahhh cool. So basically once you set it to 8Mbps it's adaptive. It won't engage when set to original. I've always set mine to original and never had an issue. Fiber at home and unlimited 5G, never a reason not to...
