What are thoughts on the roadmap for channels DVR as the Cable Companies stop supporting cable cards and HDHR devices go away as a source? Are you looking at being able to record streaming services like Hulu Live or YouTube TV? I know these services each have their cloud-based DVR services, but nothing beats my own DVR running Channels DVR on my NAS server. I realize TVE is an option but that seems to become less reliable and supported by the over time (ie. Fox Sports 1 TVE just vanished from Verizon FIOS).
Check out the adbtuner project
Where do I find info on it?
Wait, HDHR tuners are going away??
I'm hearing that cable companies are stopping support of cable cards that plug into HDHR devices. Support varies. Who knows, my Verizon FiOS cable card could still work for 10 years, or I can get an email tomorrow that they are no longer supported.
Ahh, yes, cable card support will indeed go away at some point in the future, I should have read your OP more carefully.
I did some research on adbtuner. Pretty interesting. I was hoping something internal to my NAS would be able to record multiple streams at the same time. With adbtuner an HDMI device paired with an android TV device will be needed for each stream to record. So to record 3 streams at the same time, 3 android decides connected to separate HDMI devices will be needed.
I use the onn 4k streaming boxes and stick. The stick is $14 while the regular 4k box it like $20. Some are on encoders and the stick is on a USB HDMI capture dongle using the USB HDMI Capture guide. Not a lot invested in it.
As an outsider—but someone with some background with Channels and CableCARD—the roadmap does not change. As long as your device is active, it will work with Channels.
Considering such an activity would be blatant copyright infringement, and subject to myriad lawsuits beyond the DMCA, I sincerely hope NO! (Unless you are a user based within CH, you are either a troll, or have no concept of how copyright law and streaming works within any structure of any legal framework.)
Please explain why recording video delivered via cablecard and HDHR with channels DVR is different than recording video from abdtuner/HDMI device with channels DVR.
Because the licensing agreements and terms you agree to differ between your cable operator and the streaming provider. Also, you are not circumventing encryption with a CableCARD (your cable operator has given you the means the decrypt their cable stream), but to record from a streaming provider over the internet you must circumvent their DRM, which is a violation of the DMCA.
Cable television (even if delivered via HDHomeRun tuners) and streaming services (and other OTT providers) are apples and pomegranates, regardless of how similar they may look.
