Some Recordings Are Incomplete

Several of my recordings start on time yet stop recording before the episode is finished aka 16 mins of a 30 minute show is recorded :frowning: This while another episode in parallel records completely.

Using Channels DVR Server on a NVidia Shield Pro TV with 1TB HDD (USB 3.0) with ad detection enabled. And the NVidia is not being accessed by clients while the show is being recorded.

How do I fix this?

Would the drive you're recording to perhaps be formatted FAT32, instead of NTFS, exFAT, ext4, or anything else?

Perhaps there was a problem with the feed/signal?

Perhaps supplying some logs for the duration of those recordings could shed some light on the situation?

Here are my logs relevant to the recording 16 minutes of Magnum P.I. (and sorry, recorded 16 mins of a 60 min episode).

Looks like you had an internet hiccup of some sort, as the stream stalled and stopped sending data.

Thanks for the analysis!!! I infer from what you said that the likely culprit is the shield being on a HomePlug Ethernet connection and the video from the internet stopped for a moment. I will move the NVidia to be directly connected to the router to see if that fixes the issue.

I will report back in a later this evening after doing several recordings in parallel to see if it will now work.

Yesterday I connected my NVidia Shield Pro TV to a switch directly connected to our Netgear Modem/Router.

I then recorded (4) TVE shows in parallel because that equals a 4 tuner HDHomeRun alternative. All (4) shows are incomplete (interrupted).

Here are the results:

And from the log:
2021/04/03 15:03:17.200829 [TNR] Cancelling stream TVE-DTV ch6104 after no data was received for 2m0s

2021/04/03 15:04:32.912305 [TNR] Cancelling stream TVE-DTV ch6000 after no data was received for 2m0s

et al

On the other hand, a single 2 hour episode at 9:30 PM recorded/ads detected was successful.

On the NVidia w/TVE, is there a limit to # of parallel recordings to say only 2 or only 3 in parallel at any one time? OR is there another potential cause to this issue?

You didn't answer this question. How is the drive formatted?

Just checked: NTFS. It's a Seagate 1TB USB 3.0 portable drive with 24GB used.

NTFS driver on the SHIELD is known to be problematic. ExFAT is preferred.

As I pointed out earlier, you are seeing these interruptions because of some sort of network issue most likely. The recording was interrupted because somewhere between your server and these networks' websites, the data was interrupted.

Are there any services running on your router, or perhaps another device on your home network, that might be responsible for these connections stalling out?

Thanks for sharing NTFS is a no go on NVidia....will reformat to exFAT.

I think you are right about it being a network issue. I am supposed to get 50mbps down, and I just checked and its at 30mbps down :frowning: At 30mbps, no way can one record 4 HD shows...I will up my network speed!

Actually 30Mbps should be plenty for four H264 HD streams, so unless you have other things consuming bandwidth I wouldn’t immediately assume it’s bandwidth related. I’d verify that your connection is very stable from the server before paying for more bandwidth. You could do this by setting up a continuous ping test, for example.

I ran a ping test for 11 hours and no indications of any issues.

I recorded a few shows during this time. 2 "no date" log entries occured with1 of the shows indicating interrupted while the other show doesn't indicate interrupted.

Did I choose the wrong ping service to use to test for this?

Hmm looks like they are doing a ping test from their server to your external IP address? If so, that’s not going to include anything on your internal network. To really get the full picture you’ll want to run the ping test from your DVR server device. That would be the shield, in your case. I’m not a shield user so I’m not a lot of help on that front but maybe there are some tools or utilities you could download to the device to run a ping test to an external website. I typically use Google.com.

Thanks for you help!!!

Non-trivial (for me) to setup a ping test from the Nvidia Shield :frowning:

Since I require 5.1 audio, I am going to switch from TVE (no 5.1 audio) to a HDHomeRun to provide my TV signals. That clearly will put the onus on my internal network. I will make sure then are both plugged into the same ethernet switch

If you’re running your server on the shield and the shield is on wifi, that’s likely the issue. It’s not recommended to have your server device connected via wifi. I would say the issue is likely to go away once you get as much wired as possible.

Agreed! And thanks for ensuring its wired.

I too am so hardcore that everything except mobiles be connected via wired ethernet!!! So the Shield is wired connected.

Directly connected to the router: 1) TiVo DVR, 2) my media center ethernet switch (the Shield, AVR, Smart TV, et al), 3) my Media Center PC and 4) a HomePlug connection. All of our computers & printer in other rooms are wired connected via HomePlug.
