Synology NAS to require Synology or approved third-party drives

This is for 2025 or later units with a "+" at the end of the model number. (The plus models are recommended for Channels DVR.) With unapproved drives, the "NAS devices could fail to create storage pools and lose volume-wide deduplication and lifespan analysis."

No list of approved third-party drives seems to be available yet. Seagate is reportedly one of the OEMs for Synology-branded drives, and I use their IronWolf drives so may be OK if I need a new Synology NAS.

This could be yet another reason to move on from Synology. As Channels DVR has developed, these products have become unable to support browser (web UI) and remote streaming.

Yep. I'm done with Synology. I have an aging DS918+ which I have wanted to upgrade literally for years. But each new generation they have produced gets worse. So I just bought a Mac Mini and migrated everything there. Channels, Plex, Home Assistant, VMs, and Docker containers. I'm keeping the Synology strictly as a backup device. Because that's all it is good for anymore.

I installed open source enterprise class TrueNAS SCALE on my QNAP NAS appliances many years ago and haven't looked back since. Runs on almost any x86_64 hardware. Just avoid HW RAID cards and SMR drives since it uses ZFS file system.

I once used Synology for my DVR but since I am a Windows user I use Raid 5 on it with external 5 bay Storage ... Using Windows Storage Spaces works great and can be easily moved to any Windows PC as they all support Storage Spaces.
