Tuner Sharing doesn't work with multiple HDHR?

I tested 4 different Clients and they all work.

@troyhough the screenshots you've shared are demonstrating that everything is working as intended.

There is only one tuner being used on your HDHR for each channel that is being tuned into, and the DVR is providing each of your clients with a separate copy of that channel.

Each client listed in the DVR Activity view is the client that is viewing. It doesn't mean a new tuner is being used for each client.

Looks to me like it’s sorta tuner sharing. It’s sharing channel 107.1 just fine with two clients. It’s also sharing channel 142.1 with two clients. However the client that is three down in the activity screenshot grabbed a different tuner. That client seems to be the problem. Is that the remote client?

Ah, sorry I didn’t catch the second screenshot was a different HDHR.

If you submit diagnostics from all of the clients we can see for sure, but my best guess is that the tuner priority does not match on all of your clients.

Hi @eric

Ok so I just had my dad run a test remotely. He's there, I am not. This tuner sharing issue seems to happen intermittently.

So I had him tune to channel 107.1 on 1 of the TV's in the house. It pulled 107.1 from one of my HDHR tuners like it's supposed to. Had him go to another TV and tune to 107.1. It played and did not require a 2nd HDHR tuner slot. Ok so on to the next TV. Had him tune 107.1. This time It DID pull a 2nd slot from HDHR's. Ok so had him go to Manage tuner order in Channels settings and it was in the correct order as the server and all my other clients. Ok had him shut that one off for now. Had him go to another TV and tune to 107.1 and it played and did not require a 2nd slot from the HDHR. Ok now back to the previous TV that did require a 2nd slot, had him tune to 107.1 again and this time it did NOT require a 2nd HDHR tuner.

I had him go to submit diagnostics on that box and chose "other". Any idea what is causing this? Channels bug? Thanks

troy one thing that I made sure was on Global Settings on the Web page is to set all clients that connect to use tuner sharing ... You might be doing this already then just ignore me.

Where is this setting located at specifically? Thanks

Ok I just did this too. Is this required for Tuner Sharing to work properly over many devices?

That setting only affects devices at home.

Well I guess it can't hurt anything to have it enabled? I will let you know when I see another duplicate tuner situation happen.

If you need tuner sharing it is best to have it enabled ... That way you do not have to worry about any client that connects to the DVR not sharing tuners. Also they cannot turn off tuner sharing.

That makes sense, however @tmm1 says it's only valid for LAN clients.

I thought tuner sharing was always enabled for remote users ... was my thinking wrong ? If not then I can see why sometimes you are using multiple devices for same channel.

You said: If not then I can see why sometimes you are using multiple devices for same channel.

Well no because I do have tuner sharing enabled on all my devices (local and remote) and do have the tuner order the same on all my devices (local and remote), but still using up 2 tuners on my HDHR's for the same channel at random times.

If this Global setting does control remote devices, hopefully it will tackle the random 2 tuner for the same channel problem that I am having!

PS: It could be an ATSC3 tuner sharing problem specifically, since that is typically all that I use since ATSC3 went live in my market a few months ago.

ASTC3 Is so different because only the first 2 tuners are capable of receiving them... I have all my ATSC3 disabled .... so I am bowing out of this thread for now.

Yes first 2 of 4 tuners are ATSC3 capable.

I have 2x HDHR so 4 slots of ATSC3 available total.

Thanks for the diagnostics. Looking through them, I see a couple things that jump out:

  1. The clock on that device is way off. It was reporting it was 8/14/2022 right before the diagnostics were submitted
  2. The server reported an error when it tried to tune to the first device and caused the client to retry to the next one (which is the correct behavior when the client encounters an error trying to tune to a channel)

I can't easily correlate the timestamps between the failures, but I do see some issues in the logs that line up with the HDHR device identifier and the channel that was being tuned to that indicate reception issues:

2022/08/18 08:15:53.059692 [SNR] Statistics for ch107.1 KETV: ss=84%,15%-86% snq=99%,0%-100% seq=99%,0%-100% bps=0 pps=445,0-742
...
2022/08/18 08:16:30.594412 [ERR] Failed to start stream for ch107.1: HDHomeRun: 807 No Video Data

So it appears that the original HDHR was having reception issues at the time the client tried to tune in, so it rolled over to the next HDHR and channel that was available.

I can confirm it's not limited to ATSC3. I have 2 TV's tuned to 6.1. They are each using a different HDHR tuner slot (not on the same HDHR).

  1. The Clock- would that have any effect on Tuner Sharing behavior? Would it be incorrect since I just enabled "help improve channels" on that device? It's set to automatic like all other devices. I could look into that further if you would like.

  2. The logs that you posted were dated 2022/8/18 which is after the date you mentioned of 8/14/22. If the internet was down at the time of the 2022/8/18 logs error, would that trigger said errors? Asking because there was an outage a few days back and I know we tried to tune into Channels DVR during that time. Rebooted the modem and everything was back up.

My ATSC3 signal here is strong, solid, and reliable. It sits at 87% Signal, 100% Quality, and 100% Symbol Quality at all times. Signal varies by maybe 1 or 2% and that's it.

Also, I have mentioned in a previous thread that sometimes when I tune to an ATSC3 channel (107.1), it will take an extra long time, then start playing the 7.1 channel instead even though Tuner Sharing is enabled AND there are other ATSC3 slots available to Channels DVR. Do you think that issue is related to this Tuner Sharing issue? Same goes with all other ATSC3 channels too not just 107.1. It will randomly play 6.1 instead of 106.1, 3.1 instead of 103.1, etc.

Here is a link to that ATSC3 issue I made:
