I upgraded to tvOS 11 because I’m excited for the “one home screen” feature for my 3 Apple TVs. I’m now getting stuttering on high bitrate channels. Went back to one of my tvOS 10 devices and no stuttering there. ESPN and NFL Network for sure. It does the same in instatv as well so I’m guessing it’s something that Apple has done in the new update. Just wondered if you have any input or any ideas that could be implemented to adjust for this. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!
Not sure if the stuttering you see is the same as I do. It only happens on the beta. There is a pulsating pixelation that occurs once every second or so (?coinciding with reference frames in the h264 stream) on my recordings. It does not happen with the non-beta version on the tvOS GM master. If this is not what you mean then I guess I should spin this off to a new thread in the beta section.
I’m a bit worried that if the beta code base is used to update the retail app on the 19th when tvOS 11 goes live it will introduce this new bug.
Mine is live and recorded and only on some channels that appear to be higher bitrate ones from what I can tell. The best I can describe is frame drops. I was getting some pixelation issues earlier with the full version of the app but I haven’t seen that in a few days. It’s just a constant framedrop-like stutter every couple seconds making it difficult to watch sports but doesn’t affect the audio. I guess it does kind of look pixelated too so we definitely could be seeing the same thing if you are seeing it live too.
No not the same as mine. Mine is definitely pixelation - occurs rhythmically and much worse around movement so I suspect related to I-P-B frames. It is also h264 streams only (but not all h264 streams, some seem okay) on both live and recorded. MPEG2 is fine.
Also I’ve checked and it is not tvOS 11 specific. It also happens on my other atv which I’ve kept on tvOS 10 just in case. It is beta specific - the retail version is not affected.
So need to move this issue to the beta section but I’m sure @tmm1 will read it here anyway.
Please make sure you have the latest testflight version installed, and click thr Submit Disgnostics button at the bottom of the Settings tab.
Submitted.
I’ve submitted mine also. The pixelation issue was introduced in whatever changes were made in the latest beta 9.15.648 (presumably the h264 deadlock bug workaround). 9.14.1430 and earlier do not have the problem. It also occurs on the iOS beta (iPhone 7 iOS 11 GM). FWIW I never encountered freezes with UK h264 streams on tvOS 11. I don’t think UK broadcasters change the level/profile of their streams for adverts.
I’ve uploaded a small sample recording to my drive that demonstrates the issue

Drat. Just as I feared today’s update of the retail version has introduced this issue. At least I can install the previous build of the beta so I can keep watching without these artefacts.
I was able to reproduce the issue with your sample recording, and am working on a fix.
New testflight should fix the h264 stuttering issue.
@annihilatethee From your diagnostics it seems like a bad signal, which could be due to a network issue.
Can you try tvOS 11 on the other Apple TV? Or try swapping the two to see if tvOS 11 works fine in the other location.
Try the latest testflight build too.
How do you mean bad signal in the network? The 2 aTVs are Ethernet wired to a switch in the attic. In the attic are 2 HDHRs and the DVR PC all attached to the same switch. How would network cabling issues affect the h264 stream that the PC records?
The new TestFlight fixes the deciding artefacts. Thanks very much.
@shepherdr Your h264 issue should be fixed. In @annihilatethee’s case the channels are mpeg2 and I’m see stream corruption when they reach the app.
Ah I see. The problem with 2 issues in one thread. Thanks again.
I will try that when I get home. I have tried both wired and wireless in their current locations but I will try again. I took a short clip this morning so you can see what it looks like. Easier to see if you watch the ticker at the bottom and when they pan out. I have a mesh wifi network so I can’t imagine that I should have any problems with the WiFi as far as signal goes. I didn’t have this on these two before TvOS 11 either.

Add me to the list. I’m running iOS 10 on my atv and have stuttering every second or so on recorded streams. I’m located in the U.K.
Seems to work fine on iPads in the house, so a specific problem with the atv app.
Does it on live tv as well. Running 2.1.38.
v2.1.39 is out with a fix for UK H264 playback
Moved Apple TV with tvOS 11 to location of Apple TV with tvOS 10 and still seeing this. Put Apple TV with tvOS 10 back and still not seeing this issue there. Let me know if there’s something else I can try.
