Hmm. So the same recording plays back fine on tvOS 10, but not on tvOS 11?
From your video it looks almost like a periodic hiccup?

Yeah, this was live but the recording does the same. TvOS 10 plays the live and recording fine where 11 does this hiccup. Hiccup is a great describer for it.
Thanks for the quick fix!
I was having stuttering issues with Channels on tvOS 11 with OTA MPEG2 recordings and live streams as well. This was a month or so ago, and I had since reverted back to tvOS 10, which resolved the issue. I will be upgrading to the final build when I get back home tonight, so I’ll post again if I notice an issue again.
Hi,
ATV 4 wired, HDHomerun wired, tvOS10 or 11, no DVR, Switzerland
Same issue, some live tv chan are stuttering.
For the record, the image was much more stuttering on tvOS10 on Monday.
Can you try the free app InstaTV to compare?
Just did, no problem on InstaTV :-/
Capture a short sample video from http://HDHOMERUN:5004/auto/vCHANNEL?duration=30 and send it to [email protected].
For example, if your hdhomerun’s ip is 10.0.1.1 and the channel number having issues is 12, visit this URL in chrome: http://10.0.1.1:5004/auto/v12?duration=30
Ok, sent.
The source is clean.
Thanks. Can you also check which version of Channels you are using? It should say it under the logo on the Settings tab.
2.1.39 and beta 9.18.342
both, same issue
I’m still at a loss here. Tried multiple different wiring and wireless connections to try to rule everything out and tvOS 11 always hiccups while tvOS 10 runs as expected. Anything else I can do?
Does anything make it appear as a server issue?
@annihilatethee Since both InstaTV and Channels have the same issue for you, it seems like a hardware problem. I’m not convinced it’s a tvOS 11 issue since no one else who upgraded is seeing anything similar. Can you try the Speedtest app to see how much throughput you’re getting to the Apple TV?
You could try restarting your network or a system reset on the Apple TV to see if it helps.
I’ve done network resets and both apple tvs were reset before putting on tvOS 11. Speedtest is showing 164.82 down and 23.91 up. The weirdest part is that I can interchange the location of the apple TVs and the only one that works without that hiccup on the high bitrate channels is the one with tvOS 10.
Try the tvOS VLC app too, you should be able to find your HDHR under the network section.
Is your HDHR plugged directly into the router? Is it the same router as the ATV is plugged into, or are there multiple hops in between?
What kind of router/mesh are you using? Is your network all just ethernet and wifi, or is there powerline/moca involved too?
It’s an onhub/google Wi-Fi network. It’s router/AP to switch to ap all wired together and that sends the signal to my Apple TV. Both hdhrs and pr4100 are in the switch. The switch is the only thing I haven’t ruled out. I should be able to attempt that tomorrow if I have an extra with enough ports and no one is utilizing it. That’s about the last thing I can try before tearing all my hair out haha.
VLC had the same hiccup.
Do you have any iOS devices to compare? iOS and tvOS are very similar so I’d be curious if you see the same problem there.
I have not seen this issue at all on the iPads or iPhones in my house or remote. I have two HDHR Primes and both produce this issue on my tvOS 11 Apple TVs. I just swapped my network switch out and tried both my ATV with tvOS 10 and 11 upstairs which is one of the two locations I use wifi for them in my house and still only seeing this on tvOS 11. Works fine in VLC, insta and channels on 10 but hiccups on all in 11. I am trying to think of the most basic setup I can to verify it’s not local network latency but at this point I’ve pretty much ruled that out and the only other thing I can check is my coax signal but the numbers I see on the HDHR page when I run my test channel seem fine as far as I can tell.
Plex live plays fine but it’s also transcoded to H264.
I’m also seeing the same stuttering on tvOS 11. It definitely doesn’t seem to be a Channels specific issue as it also happens in VLC. It’s very obvious while watching a hockey game (1080i mpeg2). It’s most visible when the camera pans from one end of the ice to the other.
HDHR Prime connected via Ethernet. On the same switch as the channels dvr server and the Apple TV.
Hmm. Okay well it seems like the network is ruled out as an issue.
Seems like its only happening on 1080i channels, and probably only when playing at 60fps. Try changing the deinterlacer to Blend (30fps) and see if it goes away.
Maybe Apple changed something in tvOS 11 that’s affecting 60fps playback? You could maybe try changing the video output settings on the Apple TV to see if it makes any difference.
