Blackouts & Lost Connection

Recently my channels app on my Apple TV keeps losing connection. The show will play for awhile & either go black or actually display lost connection. It never resumes on its own but If I go back to guide & go back to the show it will play.

I don’t have this problem if I use the hdhr viewer app.

This means there’s a bad network connection between your Apple TV and the hdhomerun. If you’re using Wi-Fi try switching to the 5ghz network.

I seem to have the same issue… I am using the 5ghz wireless connection to my router 10 feet away, connected via Ethernet to the HDHomeRun Prime device, connected to the Tuning adapter provided by Spectrum.

The only way I can reset the “Lost Tuner Connection” page issue is to actually restart my entire AppleTV 4.

Very strange. Does it happen if you use the free app InstaTV too?

Can you run a cable to the router?

I’ve noticed something like this a few times recently, as well. Screen goes blank, sometimes the ‘lost connection’ box comes up from the TV. I’ve been able to hit the ‘back’ button and get the screen to come back - once or twice i needed to unplug the ATV. It’s happened infrequently, don’t know how to replicate it on demand.

I actually thought it was maybe my ATV itself acting up, which may be the case for all I know. I DID update to 11.3 last week, but I THINK it happened once or twice before that.

FWIW, I’m using wired ethernet and HD Homerun Prime.

Im having the exact same issue, either the apple tv will show no network connection or it will say connection lost. I have an excellent connection with 5ghz wifi AC. All other devices and other apple tv apps work perfectly. Something is definetely going on with channels app. I might have to switch to insta tv or plex, because it is very infuriating.

IMO, both of those solutions are sub par compared to Channels. Work with Channels Devs to solve.

If your Apple TV is telling you that it has no network connection, that means your Wi-Fi is cutting out.

The hdhomerun video streams use 4x more bandwidth compared to any other app. It puts a lot more strain on your network and can surface problems not seen elsewhere.

Feel free to try InstaTV. The app is free and talks to the hdhomerun the same way, so I bet it will have the same issue.

One thing you can try is clicking “scan network for tuners” to see if it is able to reconnect to the HDHR.

Also try restarting just the app instead of the entire ATV. Click TV/Home on the remote twice and swipe up.

Given that a bunch of people are seeing this all of a sudden, maybe something changed in tvOS 11.3. I can run some tests here, but I haven’t seen anything like this so far on any of my ATVs.

I have an asus rt 86u router that handles greater than 100mbits at any point in my home, so it is certainly not my router. I stream 4k plex and netfli with 0 issues. I tried insta tv with 0 issues. Rather than instantaneously blaming the issue on the wifi router, it would be nice if you guys can assist me in further diagnosing the issues with the app that i paid 25 dollars for. Additionally, as mentioned often times the app will show conmection lost and i can go back to the guide and it will instantly play, so once again no issues with the router or the connection. I am not the only individual
Who is having this issue.

The first step would be to grab the logs when the issue occurs and email them to [email protected]

http://IP_OF_ATV:57000/log

How do I enable logging on my apple tv? I tried logging in using my apple tv ip but the pages times out. I can see the logs directly going on my apple tv menu.

That url will only work if the Channels app is running, as it accesses the Channels logs and not the tvOS logs.

You can also check the HDHR’s System Log via my.hdhomerun.com to see what it says when the error appears on the ATV.

The hd home run log will say end of stream (remote closed). I will check the logs today for channels app today after work, its hard to reproduce this issue as it happens randomly.

Update: I have not seen this issue again this week. Also, I was seeing it on ATV4K on wired ethernet. I also have a ATV4 (non 4k) on wifi that I have NOT seen any issue at all.

Again, its very intermittent on the ATV4k - no incidents this week. No incidents at all on the original ATV4.

Happened again. Heres the log

Playback started at 7:50pm. Then 9 minutes later, the read() call on the network socket failed after a 5 second (5,000,000 microseconds) timeout.

We’re using standard socket API that’s common to all linux/bsd systems… the only reason it would randomly stop returning data is if there was a network issue, or some sort of bug in the operating system.

I’m really struggling to figure out what could be happening here…

FWIW, @Imthechuck reported a similar issue a few months ago (No Network Detected (Randomly)) and it stopped when he swapped out his asus router.

And another one
