Chasing LiveTV in a Web Browser client, buffer size?

OK, "chasing live tv", think of buffers on a TiVo where a tuner is on a channel and has a 30-60 min buffer where you can watch that tuner buffer without recording what's on that tuner.

From the DVR web UI in my browser, I pick a channel from the guide and select Watch Now (I suppose same if picked from On Now).

I'm watching the channel and pause the player. How long will it buffer/cache that channel?
Right now I'm 28 minutes behind live, so Settings > Web Player > Client Buffer = 30 secs obviously has nothing to do with it.

For transcoded Live TV the server has about a 1 hour cache during the active transcoder session.

In my case it's remuxing (I assume that's what you meant by transcoding Live TV).

Was looking for something more specific, as in what is the limit?

Is it in cache bytes and if so, how many bytes.

I've gone from 40 something minutes to over an hour and a half, so assume it's related to cache size in bytes and depends on the bit rate of the channel/program being watched.

Reason I ask is I was doing this and after a long pause (don't know how long, but over an hour) it instantly jumped to Live and I lost the buffer/cache.

Yes, I was referring to anything that is using HLS to stream.

That could be because it was longer than the hour or it could be because the browser tab was moved to the background and closed the session.

chasing a live cable tv (hdhr prime tuner) local news channel and experienced buffering/pause issues.

Happens during live viewing in the dvr web ui (my channels client), channels dvr recording of the same program has no problem.

For those not in the know...
This means that I've selected a channel to view Live TV from either On Now or from the grid guide from the Channels DVR web UI using my HDHR Prime tuner. Think of this as I've tuned to a cable channel on my Prime and am watching it Live in my browser. Just like a TiVo buffers each of its tuners and you can chase that buffer up to Live (current) time. Only difference is that Channels DVR takes the signal from the HDHR Prime and remuxes it (and whatever else it does?) to provide the video/audio that the Channels DVR web UI browser player can play.

I start viewing by selecting the channel through the grid guide or watch now, then pause at least 10 seconds before playing to eliminate any issues with buffering.

After watching for over an hour (pausing and resuming and skipping forward, at most 30 minutes behind) it reaches a point where it just shows the buffering circle and will stay there forever unless I skip forward 30s and resume play.

P.S. I always pause at least 10 seconds on any Channels live OTA/CABLE/TVE viewing to avoid Channels buffering issues.

Happened again, chasing cable Live TV on a channel and it suddenly stops like it's buffering, even though I'm 40:14 into the 52:11 buffer.

Cant skip forward or backward.

I can select a point on the timeline in the past and play up to the exact same point where it stops again (at 40:14) and acts like it's buffering again.

Cannot click forward in time, no response.

DVR log doesn't show anything usefull;

Very strange. If you update to the latest pre-release and open a new tab to click Help > Submit Diagnostics while its stuck, that may help us to see what's getting stuck and where.

OK. May be awhile before I try this again.
Currently running Release version 2020.03.27.1730 and using Firefox 75.0.
I clicked way ahead in the timeline and it's still stuck at the same point.

Just updated to latest pre-release 2020.04.28.0122 since I couldn't continue watching.

OK, so not sure what submit diagnostics will show me.

Next time this happens should I;
a) submit diagnostics right away
b) Wait a few seconds, then submit diagnostics
c) Try to skip backward 10 secs, then submit diagnostics
d) Try to skip forward 30 secs, then submit diagnostics
e) Click ahead on the timeline, then submit diagnostics
f) Click behind on the timeline, then submit diagnostics

g) All of the above
h) Some combination of the above

OK, got it to happen.
Was watching LiveTV, started from the grid guide Watch Now.
Watched and would pause when commercials appeared, waited 3+ minutes then play and use 30 sec skip forward to get through commercials, never advancing more than 10 secs behind LiveTV.

It finally stopped and appears like it's buffering at 1:29:36, sent diagnostics b0c6ce34-7bda-4214-a886-e04d1b257c79. I tried skipping back 10 secs and it did, but stopped and appeared buffering again at the same point 1:29:36.

Console logs don't show any error I can tell, see below;

Have you had a chance to look at the diagnostics I sent?

Wanted to add some additional info.

I did the same thing tonight (chasing a live cable channel) with Firefox on my laptop running the same OS and same Firefox browser version as my desktop I reported the issue on.

I don't remember the exact point in time (maybe 36 minutes of 40 something minutes into LiveTV), but it stopped playing and was showing the buffering circle.

I waited a few seconds and clicked the 30 skip forward button and it skipped forward and continued playing.

I then kept clicking the 10 sec skip back button until I was before the previous buffering time and let it play.

When it reached the same time where it had stopped before, instead of stopping this time it just skipped about 6 secs ahead and kept playing.
Repeated the above and it skipped 3 secs ahead and continued playing.
Repeated that again and it skipped 1 sec ahead and continued playing.

I was just trying from my laptop to make sure it wasn't just my PC having the issue, so didn't send diagnostics.

There is a way to enable more logging in the web player. You have to do this first after a browser refresh and before you use the player for the first time in a given browser session.

Until this is figured out I'll just set a recording for maximum time (current show in guide +300 minutes) on the channel I'm chasing LiveTV on so I don't lose the LiveTV buffer I'm watching.
