Intel NUC

Also interested in preferred distro and NUC support. I dont own a nuc yet but the celeron version is super cheap. I cant imagine it has less power than some of the NAS units described above, but maybe I am wrong .

Also, has anyone tried running it in a linux VM?

The Intel Celeron N3xxx and J1xxx processors are what all the new NAS use too, and they work very well.

NAS are generally easier to setup and use, but if you’re comfortable building a NUC and setting up Linux on it, that’s a fantastic option and quite cost effective too.

We recommend Debian/Ubuntu, although any version of Linux should work.

I was going to post a word of caution about accounting for storage capacity in your NUC but since I have not been shopping for high capacity 2.5" HDDs in a LONG time I totally missed that Seagate has produced a 5 TB drive for about $225!

Wowzers that’s a lot of data in a little space.

@mpfountz Did you end up getting that NUC?

Nope - went with Hyper-V image of Ubuntu. I am cheap

I have no doubt it would work great though. I am running mine on a 6 year old laptop with no issues at all. Although I dont transcode to the browser. I only watch through apple TV

I love it. This is my favorite part of Channels DVR. Just find some hardware around the house and give it a try. Heh.

i’m running it in an ubuntu VM with no issues.

I moved my final setup to the Intel NUC and it’s working like a charm with Fedora 25. Will post my deployment specs and total cost in the hardware section.

Update =========================================

Below is my current deployment… I’m sharing for reference only in case someone would like a similar setup:

Mini PC: Intel NUC 6I5SYH (quad core i5 6260U). Latest BIOS update was applied - Ver. 55
RAM: 16GB (DDR4 2133)
M.2 SSD: 128 GB (6gb/s) <-- OS Drive
SSHD: 2TB (2.5 Inch, 6GB/S) <-- DVR Drive
OS: Fedora Wstn 25

Total Cost: $646 (purchased from Amazon)

The NUC currently runs Channels DVR and Plex Server. In my personal opinion this is the perfect deployment to run both server applications.

Congratulations to the developers on the public release… This is an awesome and well executed project.

Thank you!

Another good deal on an Intel NUC

A 7th generation i3 is also available for the same price:

The 7th Gen is good too since it has HDMI 2.0 and HEVC support.

I just picked up the Apollo Lake model (BOXNUC6CAYH) and it’s pretty awesome.

Check out these benchmark comparisons with the N3050. And it’s quad core vs dual. That’s a big deal. At $149, that’s only $17 more than the model with the N3050 in it.

Warning!!

One thing you need to watch out for on this model is the ram. It’s insanely picky about the ram it uses and the property of the ram that makes a difference isn’t even listed in product descriptions. It’s pretty bad. Here’s the support document. And here’s the list of ram.

I have been running the Apollo Lake Model for over a month now and it works super nice. I posted my setup here. On the ram I had no issues since I just used intel’s listed of supported models. I put 2TB internal drive and there is plenty of room for recordings.

Take care,

Stephen
