Need Help with PrismCast Crashes, Lock-Ups and Being Unable to Run It with the Latest Chrome in Windows 11

I continue to have the following channel-tuning or perhaps better described as video-playing issue (not new to this version):

When I try to tune a Prismcast channel, it will appear in the Chrome window but not in the Channels interface and, if it's a scheduled recording rather than something I'm looking at live, will fail to record. If I let it attempt to tune for a couple of minutes while watching in the Channels interface, then stop it, then re-request it, then it will play.

There are numerous configuration settings provided but I don't understand them well enough to guess if changing any of them would help. Any ideas? Do others have this issue?

My Channels and Prismcast servers are on Windows 11 Pro 64 bit. Prismcast is installed via NPM 24.

You should post your PrismCast log details for the failed tune in question, and more specifics about how you have things setup. There are lots of options for initiating a tune in PrismCast, and how you're specifically initiating it is important information.

I'm not sure which details you are asking for. I also don't know what you mean by "options for initiating a tune." I go into Channels via browser or one of the two clients I've mentioned below, view the guide, and press "watch" on something, or I set up a recording. Not sure what other options there might be for initiating a tune, unless you mean things done from the Prismcast interface.

My setup is pretty standard. Here's everything I can think of that might be relevant:

Version: 1.11, with node.js ver 24.
Channels Server: Windows 11 Pro, 64 bit, running semi-headless (it has an HDMI-dongle with a pass-through that is attached to an HDMI cable that goes to a switch box, which is usually switched to my primary client computer (i.e. not the server). When I want to talk to it, view its display, etc., I use remote desktop through my LAN.
Prismcast Server: same machine
Chrome Frozen at 148. When it updated to 151, I couldn't get Prismcast to work at all. At first, it wouldn't even start up. I was able to roll it back and freeze updates. I also loaded the revised puppeteerStream.js that was linked to this topic a few weeks ago. When I installed 1.11 it overwrote that, and again I couldn't get Prismcast to work, so after trying various combinations of original vs. revised puppeteerstream.js and Chrome 148 vs 151, I found that the combination that worked most often was Chrome 148 plus revised puppeteerStream.js - but even that has the problems noted.
Clients: tried on various, but mostly use a different computer on the same wired gigabyte LAN: Windows 10 Pro 64bit, Firefox. However, the results I've seen are similar when I try to tune any of my Prismcast channels. The problem occurs more often than things work as expected. Also tried using Nucleus HTPC and DVR Desk. Any channel I try to tune nearly always required (if it's going to work at all) two tries before it works. Also tried Chrome on the Win 10 box, Chrome & Firefox on the server box. No appreciable difference.
Channel Source: Xfinity - logged in multiple times
Prismcast settings Everything default except I changed fps to 30; it says 60 recommended for sports, but I don't watch sports. I think I've tried with and without channel precaching, currently not precaching.

Other issues: Prismcast often gets to the point where nothing at all works and I have to cycle the server off & on multiple times, reboot the server, and repeat until it seems to want to work again.

I think we can safely say your setup is not standard. Not being able to use PrismCast with the latest version of Chrome, and having to run a user modified version of PuppeteerStream.js are the first things you should address.

As a test, I have a Windows 11 Pro VM with an Intel graphics card passed through to it. It had an up-to-date version of Chrome installed on it. Using the WinUtil-for-Channels tool, I installed PrismCast on it. I did a quick configuration for Sling, and enabled various premium channels.

I created a CDVR Custom Channels Source (this is an example of what I mean by "how are you initiating a tune"), that looks like this:

I then tuned to four different channels, running each for 6-14 minutes. I had no issues with any tunes, or while streaming:

So, no special versions of Chrome required, no special installations, no modified javascript -- 100% standard.

As I said, from my perspective job #1 for you is to figure out why you can't install and run PrismCast without having to jury-rig things.

One other item I noticed in your logs, is that you have the video bit rate set at 1Mbps -- which is very low, and also non-standard. 12Mbps is where the bit rate was set on this newly installed version of PrismCast, which I would consider the default.

Also, since PrismCast has significant hardware resource requirements, it'd be good to know the specs on your system as far as processor, gpu, memory, drive type and whether any of your connected systems are using WiFi rather than Ethernet.

Thanks for your detailed reply. The reason I froze my Chrome version and used the tweaked .js file was that when my Chrome updated itself a few weeks ago, Prism simply wouldn't start up. Some searching revealed an issue with Chrome not liking the Puppeteer plugin. The tweaked .js theoretically will work even with newer Chrome, but in my testing with the latest Prism, I ran into some difficulties, so I updated Chrome in case that would help. It didn't. I re-installed the tweaked .js - still no help. I then reverted Chrome and re-disabled updates. That worked.

I know why I initially had to revert Chrome, but would have thought the newer Prism version would have fixed the issue and I could let Chrome update. But it didn't. I don't know why.

You asked about my hardware:
My server is on a Ryzen 5 5500 with 16gb RAM. GPU is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4gb
Everything is on ethernet, not wifi.
Windows 11 is ver 25H2
Server has a 1tb M2 drive and 8TB hdd, but the default recording location is on another PC on my network (for interoperability with Sage), with the 8gb server-local hdd as 2nd choice.

Everything else I've tried on Channels has worked fine with the setup; Prismcast has been the only problem.

I'd forgotten that I set the bitrate to 1mbps. My Sage recordings typically come in around there, maybe a bit more, so it seemed reasonable. My main reason was to avoid huge video files without having to spend a lot of time with Handbrake to shrink them down to a tolerable size. I keep a lot of my recordings around for quite a while and while I can always add more storage, I don't want to be profligate with it, especially since prices are currently so high.

Anyway, I tried setting the video bitrate to 8mbps, and succeeded in getting better tuning.

Edit: I then added 2 overlapping recordings, and both failed. Logs from that period:

Both channels I was trying to record on had previously been tuned, yet the log shows a request for a sign-in. Also, after the failure, Prism appeared to be inactive so I manually restarted it. The logs don't seem to have anything to say about that.

After the re-start, Prism returned to its former behavior: tune once, error; tune same channel again right after, it plays, so the brief success at 8mbps appears to have been just random luck. As I've said, it works occasionally, but mostly has to be constantly poked at.

So, upping the mbps to 8 worked once then no more. I'd still like to keep file sizes as low as possible, and one hour at 8mbps produced a 3gb file, which is larger than I'd like. Handbrake, I've found, has had difficulty working on some of my Channels recordings & I've had to use hand-entered ffmpeg commands to do the conversions, so I'd like to keep the starting-size down if I can. Any clue how low I can sefely go? I've also found it a bit of a pain to restart Prismcast after changing a setting. I'm probably doing it wrong. What I do is:

prismcast service stop
prismcast service start

But the second command doesn't start up the Chrome window, so I enter
prismcast
But it throws an error that it's already running, so I have to use taskkill to stop it and then I can restart.

Also, on a reboot, the service usually doesn't start, though I've tried various things I've seen here on how you're supposed to be able to start it as a service, so I often have to do it manually after a reboot.

I just set it as a source according to the instructions provided, and "/playlist" was part of what it said to include in the setup.

For what it's worth, I previously had to disable hyper-v in my windows setup when PrismCast started crashing. I initially thought it was a chrome update issue.

I had the same problem with hyper-v and chrome. Prism would not recognize the Chrome encoder unless I disabled hyper-v.

This is issue #1 in my mind. You need to figure out why your setup isn't working with PrismCast out-of-the-box when others (like multiple WIndows 11 systems I've installed it on) do.

Again, not normal behavior, and this is where I would suggest you focus your troubleshooting. Before bothering with recording or file sizes, get PrismCast working with the latest Chrome and no hacked javascript.

Once you’ve addressed those foundational issues, if you're still having trouble with Xfinity Stream, I'd recommend you set up some channels using various network websites where you can use your Xfinity credentials as a TV Provider login.

My sense is that you have multiple different issues going on, and that they need to be dealt with one-by-one, taking on the structural concerns first.

I'm getting Prismcast crashes regularly, but just checked and I don't have hyper-v turned on in Windows. So still no clue as to the issue.

I see lots of adjustments, but have no idea which ones to try for my problem (see above Introducing PrismCast: Browser-based Live TV Capture for Channels DVR and Plex - #1680). Other than randomly fiddling to see what happens, I don't know which changes I should consider. I really know little or nothing about the inner workings of either Chrome or Prismcast.

Well yes, there are issues with Chrome and Prismcast, but all you're suggesting is that I try to troubleshoot them. That's obvious. What's not at all obvious is how to go about it. I've looked at the logs and settings and they are not giving me any clues that tell me what to check or try. If I knew how to go about troubleshooting the specific problem, I'd have done so rather than come here for help.

In addition to a "login wall" (when already logged in), other errors logged include claiming the channel isn't listed (when I can plainly see that it is), "Stream setup failed for https://www.xfinity.com/stream/listings: Cannot capture a tab with an active stream." which I can't interpret at all, a warning, "[WARN] Display detection produced invalid chrome dimensions after 3 attempts (-1264×-539). Window sizing may be incorrect." which isn't helpful towards figuring out how to fix.

Even watching the logs "live" in one window as I try to tune in another, I get results that make no sense. For example:
